<div><strong>Our Story</strong>
</div>
<div>In El Paredón, Guatemala, thousands of Olive Ridley turtle (Parlama) eggs are collected each season for sale and consumption. By law, egg collectors (parlameros) must donate 20% of each nest to hatcheries, but the remaining 80% is usually sold on the market.

<div>To address this, we launched a community-driven initiative: we buy the remaining eggs to prevent them from being consumed, while also providing local families with a fair income. In this way, those who once poached are now becoming protectors.
</div>

<div>Last year, only about 11,000 eggs were rescued during the entire season, partly due to climate change and shifting ocean currents, which affect how many females return to nest. This year, thanks to collective effort, we have already saved 59,470 eggs!

<div><strong>How Donations Are Used</strong>

<div>The ongoing cost of always providing a local guide to share information and environmental education is fully absorbed by <strong>The Driftwood Surfer,</strong> as part of its long-standing commitment to conservation. Legally, however, the hatchery belongs to CONAP (the National Council of Protected Areas), and we work alongside this framework.

<div>En El Paredón, Guatemala, cada temporada miles de huevos de tortuga Parlama (Olive Ridley) son recolectados para su venta y consumo. Aunque por ley los recolectores (parlameros) deben entregar el 20% de cada nido a los criaderos autorizados, el resto suele terminar en el mercado.

<div>Para enfrentar esta realidad, hemos impulsado una iniciativa comunitaria: compramos los huevos restantes para evitar que lleguen al consumo y, al mismo tiempo, damos a los parlameros un ingreso digno. Así, quienes antes eran cazadores hoy se convierten en protectores.

<div>El año pasado se rescataron aproximadamente 11,000 huevos en toda la temporada, en parte debido al cambio climático y a las variaciones en las corrientes marinas, que afectan cuántas hembras llegan a anidar. Este año, gracias al esfuerzo colectivo, ¡ya hemos salvado 59,470 huevos!
