Hi there, I'm Sam...but this fundraiser isn't about me.
Remi has been my partner for almost a decade. We've been through a lot together, and even after this long, it gets me choked up and makes my hands shake to type out how deeply I care about this person that I've been lucky enough to have in my life. I don't have a broad enough vocabulary to articulate how much I love him, but I think he knows that. I think he knows that nothing makes me happier than seeing him with a smile on his face.
That's why I'm starting this fundraiser!
A few years ago Remi came out as transgender. I've been so proud to watch him jump over the hurdles that come after, from the small things like changing pronouns to the huge, terrifying challenge of existing as the opposite of everything everyone always told him he was supposed to be. For a trans person, every day is an uphill battle of self-esteem. It hurts me to see the person I love trapped, metaphorically and literally, having to squeeze himself into a ribcage-crushing piece of stretchy fabric every day to flatten his chest out and, hopefully, avoid being misgendered with "ma'am"s and "miss"es. It hurts me to watch, and I can't imagine how much it hurts to be the person living it. It's not easy to live in a body that doesn't match the mind.
It's also not easy to admit that you need help. Remi has been dreaming for a long time about top surgery to help fix that mismatch, to help him live that much more freely in the body he's always wanted. He's closer than ever to achieving his goal; what once seemed so distant and unattainable is now just a consultation away. But there is another obstacle in the way: the cost!
Right now we're setting a small goal, as we're unsure of how much the total coast of the procedure will be until he gets his consultation. However, we do know that insurance will not cover the entire cost, and that's where we need your help. Any contribution helps. Sharing this page helps.
