Help Rebuild Ana's Village, Fiji

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Lucy and my best friend is Ana. Ana is a marine scientist from Fiji and in the past few months her village has been completely destroyed by tropical cyclones. So, to help this small community get back on their feet, I’ll be getting up on mine! For every €20 you donate, I pledge to run 1km! So, if you want to help Ana’s village (or just punish me!) please donate anything you can.

Ana lives in Nakalou village in Vanua Levu, Fiji. It is a small coastal community, currently home to 78 families. In the past year, Fiji has been hit by FIVE tropical storms, two of which were severe Tropical Cyclones: Tropical Cyclone Yasa (Category 5) in Dec. 2020 and Tropical Cyclone Ana (Category 2) less than a month later in Jan. 2021.

In December Cyclone Yasa brought strong gusty winds of 120 – 185km/hour that swept across the country destroying everything in its path. Ana’s village suffered greatly; many farms were destroyed, and 68 houses were either damaged or completely destroyed. As the community began to rebuild what they could, and preparing the children for the new school year, they were hit again by Cyclone Ana in January, 2021. Cyclone Ana brought torrential rain that went on for two days and caused flooding in most parts of the country. This heavy downpour caused an opening in the ground in the middle of the village, which often leads to landslides, and is putting the lives of 10 families at risk. These 10 families have been evacuated and are now taking shelter in the Nakalou village hall while the community is looking for ways to relocate them. With damaged farms and homes, the community has been relying on food rations from the government and other organisations while trying to recover.

Nakalou villagers are kindly requesting any financial donations that would help them rebuild their homes and also, send their children back to school. All funds raised will be used to purchase urgently needed building materials (i.e. iron roofing, nails, timber), education materials for kids and basic food items.

I will post regular updates of our progress and how your donations are helping Nakalou.

Thank you / Vinaka vaka levu,

Lucy & Ana

xx
