When I was just a teenager, all this would’ve blown my mind. Me owning and operating a vegan restaurant in my hometown? I would’ve told you you’re crazy. But here I am. Doing what I love. And hoping to give back to the community.

My name is Dalan Moreno, and I was born and raised in Santa Barbara. I’ve been vegan for 17 years, and have seen firsthand how our city has changed and adapted to the rise in veganism.

17 years ago feels like a lifetime ago. You couldn’t find vegan burgers at Carl’s Jr. or walls of speciality cheeses. And as much as our community has changed, it’s always felt a step or two behind other major cities. I always felt like something was missing. And I wanted to changed that.

So in 2018, I started Rascals. And I started Rascal’s as a necessity, as something I wanted as a consumer. Good affordable vegan food for everybody.

I started by serving tortas and burgers out my kitchen window. That turned to pop ups around town, which led to two different residencies in two different locations.

And now I’ve been presented with an opportunity to grow. I just signed a lease for a restaurant of my own. Right on Haley St. A place that I hope the vegan and non vegan community alike will support and love.

When I started this project, people would say that a spot like this would do great in LA. Maybe they’re right. But that’s not the point. I want to give back to Santa Barbara, the place that raised me. And I want it to be for everyone, the young kid like me looking for a vegan spot or someone just wanting to try something new.

But being an independent business owner isn’t easy. And with opening a new space comes a lot of costs. That’s why I’m making this video. In hopes that people who have enjoyed my food, people who want there to be options in their city, for curious lovers of food, for friends, family, everyone — I hope all of you can help give me the little push I need to move forward and thrive.

Thank you all for your continued support, I can’t wait to serve you all food. See you soon.
