Help Randy with nursing home placem

My husband Randy and I have been married almost 44 years. He worked hard as a baker many of those years, always on his feet and rushing around. Those of you who know him know that he has always been a big guy. All of that combined to cause severe degenerative joint disease (arthritis) in his hip. He also lost his job in 2008 during the recession and was unable to find another job. We were forced to begin using his ESOP (stock for retirement) in 2008. He was not eligible to retire until 2014. By that time it was practically depleted. We live on his SS and my disability. Unfortunately we literally live check to check and have no savings.

Randy’s health has continued to decline, and he is only able to walk a few feet with a walker. He has also developed some memory and orientation issues. He is a big fall risk, and fell again on Wednesday. Because of his size, I am unable to get him up and I have to call paramedics to get him up from the floor. He needs 24 hour care and support which I have been providing for several years. I also have some challenging health issues and can no longer provide the level of care that he needs. I have made the toughest decision of my life. I have to place Randy in a nursing home. While he is now in the hospital, he does not have a medical diagnosis that Medicare considers needing skilled care. Therefore Medicare will not pay a penny to the nursing home. They will apply for Medicaid on his behalf and that will pay for the nursing home expense once it is approved. Any nursing home that he is placed in will require money up front while they are waiting on Medicaid. We simply do not have it. We have no savings or any other resources.
