Hi my name is Noma and i am an Asylum seeker from Zimbabwe living in Belfast. Due to my status as an Asylum seeker it is illegal for me to work and i can not access any public funding for education i.e. loans/ grants.
I have lived in Belfast for nearly two years and have made this city my home. I am involved in many community initiatives locally such as Housing 4 All and Larne Detention Center Visiting Group. Also on a UK scale i am the secretary of health, education and welfare for ZAPU which is a party in opposition to the ruling party in Zimbabwe.
Last year i completed an access course in Biomedical Science at Belfast Metropolitan College and in August i was offered a place at Ulster University for a foundation degree in Applied and Medical Sciences. I accepted the offer and have started the course but have not been able to pay the fees. I will not be able to complete the course unless these fees are paid by January. The course costs £2500 per year.
The course is for two years however if i pass the first year i can enroll in a Pharmacy degree going straight into second year - this is my goal. There are scholarships available for Asylum seekers for undergraduate degree programs.
This is so important to me as i want to pursue a career in the health industry as i feel passionately that health is a huge issue in the UK and internationally especially in my home country Zimbabwe. This is where i feel my passion for social justice and interest in activism would be best channeled.
Thank you for your generosity it is much appreciated,
Noma
