South London saturday school, ABSS needs your help in raising future aspirational students in our community!

Afruika Bantu Saturday School (ABSS) launches its emergency appeal to raise £12 000 by January 2018 to cover our yearly operating costs.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Afruika Bantu Saturday School. We were established in 1997 to support children aged 5 to 16 years, of African heritage, who the educational system was systematically failing.

We offer excellent academic and cultural education that has been able to assist many children from our community to achieve outstanding results in their future studies. Some of these students have returned to the school as volunteer teachers to be great role models for current aspiring pupils.

We teach Maths, English, Science and Black (African) history. We recognise that education not only takes place in the classroom, but is affected and determined by the state and wider society. We have delivered workshops on the challenges that our children face in wider society, such as peer group pressures, gangs, policing (stop & search etc), healthy living, lifestyle and African identity. We have carried out educational and fun outings, sports and cultural days, Black History Month and children’s achievement and celebration days. We have a Black Parents’ Forum which is open to all parents and carers in the community.

We are currently not funded by any institutions. We keep our fees to parents low, so we are accessible to all in our community. Due to financial pressures, we have had to cut back on many of our extra-curricular activities. It is for this reason that we are now appealing to our community and friends for support. Without your support, our future is in serious jeopardy. Our £12 000 per annum appeal will cover our venue costs; volunteers’ expenses; extra curricular activities; vital cultural, sports and children’s achievement celebrations; educational seminars; and our annual memorial education lecture. We would also like to set up and manage our website.

Malcolm X correctly defined the education system as the ‘killing fields’. We know from experience that with the right kind of support, we can navigate our children through those ‘killing fields’ to success.

The children are our future. It takes a village to raise a child. Thank you for your support.
