 Today I knocked on a woman named Qnique’s door and asked if she had any food she could spare.

 Without even thinking twice, she went inside and brought me taco shells and meat.

 What I didn’t know at the time was that she had just given me all the food they had left.

 That was supposed to be her family’s dinner. It was the only food Qnique and her children had, and yet when a complete stranger showed up at her door asking for something to eat, she gave it away.

 Then she apologized because she couldn’t give me any water.
</div>

 I later found out why: their water had been shut off.
</div>

 Qnique explained that things had gotten so difficult without running water that they were having to use cups just to go to the bathroom.
</div>

 I gave Qnique $500 to thank her for her incredible kindness, and she broke down crying.
</div>

 That’s when I learned just how difficult things had become.
</div>

 Qnique is a single mom who just got evicted and has to move out today, and she told me she was planning to go to a shelter to apply and see if they had a room available for her family. She didn’t know where they were going to sleep or what was going to happen next.

 I couldn’t believe it.

 Here was a mom wondering where her family was going to live, without running water and with barely any food — and when someone she had never met knocked on her door hungry, she gave him her family’s last meal.

 She could have said no.
</div>

 Instead, she chose kindness.
</div>

 Now I think it’s our turn to show Qnique that same kindness.
