Namaste! My name is Rushi Patel. I am a high school student who is driven to make my voice be heard, to make an impact on the lives of others, and most importantly to make a difference in my community and on humanity. During my visit to the KP Amin School in Vaso, India, I felt a connection, an unbreakable bond between me and the impoverished children. <div>      It stays with me; the life-changing experience The key to success is not always a direct path. In fact, it is not one key that brings about success, but rather it takes an abundance of keys to unlock a series of doors leading to a myriad of opportunities. In the impoverished village of Vaso, India, there is only one key hanging on the door of each child's home - the key that allows each child to continue following the path of their ancestors into the farm or into the dilapidated, run-down shop. Without the gift of education (a set of keys) ever bestowed on these assiduous young children, they are forced to let go of their precious dreams.        During my trip to Vaso, I visited several homes in the poverty-stricken village. Being from Vishal's home or Raj's home or Urma's home, I saw the same key - the same symbol of the continuity of lost hope from the corner of my eye. Where Vishal dreamed of being an engineer, he was forced to continue tailoring just like his father. Where Raj dreamed of being a doctor, he was forced to continue tending his goats and running the makeshift stall his dad put up in front of his shanty home. Where Urma dreamed of being a nurse, she was forced to continue helping her mother collect the vegetables and fruits on the farm during the day and cook during the night. Their parents wanted their lofty dreams to be a reality, but Urma's mom told me, "We have no money for school. We just have a small farm and barely a house. There is neither a spare rupee for a pencil nor space for a reading book." It was this powerful ideology that has resonated in my mind and has shown me the way that I could make a difference in these children's lives and in the lives of generations to come. <div> Our Inspiration        Just after his graduation, my grandpa, an aspiring doctor in the 1960’s dreamed of landing in America for a better future and rich lifestyle. Meanwhile, he began his career as a lecturer at M.P. Shah Medical College in Jamnagar. Imagine to his surprise, the table turned. He decided his true calling was to serve his own rural community as the indelible imprints of his childhood evoked. As a boy, he toiled on the farm to help his father during the day and studied under the streetlight at night. Poverty was the main impetus of his endeavor to help the poor. Neither the scorching heat of summer nor the pouring rain of monsoon deterred him from traveling on horseback to visit patients living in remote farms. Not only did he provide free medical services to the unfortunates, but also gave them bus fare and money to buy medicine. In helping others, he found solace and his own happiness.  From the beginning, my grandpa always believed in having a good education. While remaining true to the experiential knowledge of our ancestors and drawing inspiration in our roots, he founded a school in Vaso in 1997 where the children can enrich their lives by learning moral values, indigenous culture, and traditions beyond the pages of the books. Today, the school has become a phenomenal success.        His journey, the lives of Vishal and Raj and the countless other children, has inspired me to start a charity organization to carry on his legacy.
