<div>Everything. And we want to tell you all about it.

<div>We are a team of fungi lovers—biologists, musicians, traditional foragers—and we’re producing an independent documentary about Los Moní: a group of wild edible mushrooms. Some of them appear with the first rains of the year (Lactifluus spp.), while others emerge after the midsummer drought (Cantharellus coccolobae and Tremelloscypha gelatinosa).

<div>These mushrooms grow only in very specific forests in southeastern Mexico, where a tree locally known as Nangaño in Chiapa, Aguaná in Zoque, and Pomos in Tseltal (Gymnopodium floribundum) dominates the landscape. These fungi are incredibly important to the people of Chiapas. They have nourished not only generations of families but also their identities, rituals, and memories. Los Moní are more than just food: they are symbols of connection to the forest, to ancestors, and to a worldview rooted in the land.

<div>But their habitat is under threat, and so is the knowledge surrounding them.

<div>What Will We Do With Your Support?

<div>Your donation will help us produce the short documentary Los Moní del Nangaño and organize the 3rd Moni Fest, a community festival in Tuxtla and surrounding areas. At this event, we’ll screen the documentary and offer a space for educational, cultural, and culinary activities focused on Los Moní and the other mushrooms that thrive in Nangañal forests.

<div>Rent or purchase recording equipment (audio, video, stabilizers).

<div>Cover transportation to the forest communities where Moní is collected.
</div>

<div>Offer symbolic gifts to participants: foragers, cooks, musicians, translators, guides.

<div>Organize the 3rd MoniFest (logistics, materials, sound).

<div>Create outreach and educational materials for the community.

<div>Why is This Important?

<div>Honoring Los Moní and their guardians—the Nangañal forests—allows people from Tuxtla, Suchiapa, Chiapa de Corzo, Coita, and other neighboring towns to reconnect with a natural resource that is deeply woven into their biocultural identity. Recovering and sharing this knowledge strengthens local pride and empowers the community to understand what they have, what it’s for—not only as food but also as a key element of their ecosystem—and why it must be protected.

<div>You can’t love what you don’t know. That’s why we want more Chiapanecans to discover these natural and cultural treasures—so they can value them, and defend them. Starting from the story of Moní, we also want to spark curiosity about the many other fungi growing in these forests, and about all the life Nangañales sustain: trees, birds, insects, soil—and the ancestral knowledge that binds it all together.

<div>Ayúdanos a contar la historia de Los Moní del Nangaño: hongos, identidad biocultural y patrimonio chiapaneco.

<div>¿Qué tienen en común unos hongos silvestres, la cultura Zoque y Chiapa, una marimba y un bosque de hadas inmerso en las selvas del centro Chiapas? Todo. Y queremos contártelo.
</div>

<div>Somos un equipo conformado por amantes de los hongos, tanto biólogos, como músicos, o recolectores tradicionales, y estamos produciendo un documental independiente sobre los Moní, un conjunto de hongos comestibles silvestres, de los que algunos brotan en las primeras lluvias del año (Lactifluus spp.), mientras otros salen después de la canícula (Cantharellus coccolobae y Tremelloscypha gelatinosa).

<div>Estos hongos solo crecen en bosques muy específicos del sureste de México, en los que domina una planta conocida como Nangaño en Chiapa, Aguaná en Zoque, y Pomos en Tseltal (Gymnopodium floribundum). Estos hongos son sumamente importantes para los chiapanecos,  ya que han nutrido no solo a generaciones, sino también a su identidad, sus rituales y sus memorias. Los Moní no son solo alimento. Son símbolos de conexión con el bosque, con los ancestros y con una forma de entender el mundo desde la tierra.

<div>Pero su entorno está amenazado. Y sus saberes, también.

<div>¿Qué haremos con tu apoyo?

<div>Tu donativo servirá para realizar el mini documental “Los Moní del Nangaño” y para organizar el “3er Moni Fest”, un festival comunitario donde compartiremos este trabajo con las comunidad tuxtleca y aledaña, además de actividades educativas, culturales y gastronómicas alrededor de los Moní, y otros hongos presentes en los bosques de Nangaño.

<div>Usaremos los fondos para:

<div>Rentar o adquirir equipo de grabación (audio, video, estabilización).

<div>Cubrir traslados a las localidades donde se recolecta el Moní.
</div>

<div>Pagar cuotas y ofrecer obsequios simbólicos a personas participantes: recolectores, cocineras, músicos, traductores, guías.

<div>Producir el 3er MoniFest (logística, materiales, sonido).

<div>Generar materiales de divulgación y educación comunitaria.

<div>¿Por qué es importante?

<div>Enaltecer a los Moní y a sus guardianes —los bosques de Nangaño— permite acercar a la gente de Tuxtla, Suchiapa, Chiapa de Corzo, Coita y otras localidades vecinas a un recurso que forma parte esencial de su identidad biocultural. Recuperar estos saberes y compartirlos con la sociedad fortalece el sentido de pertenencia y empodera a quienes habitan esta región, al mostrarles qué poseen, para qué sirve —no solo como alimento, sino también como elemento clave en el ecosistema— y por qué es necesario protegerlo.

<div>No se puede amar lo que no se conoce. Por eso, queremos que más chiapanecos descubran estos tesoros naturales y culturales, para que puedan valorarlos y defenderlos. A partir del Moní como punto de partida, también buscamos despertar el interés por los demás hongos que crecen en estos bosques, así como por toda la vida que albergan los Nangañales: árboles, aves, insectos, suelos y saberes que merecen ser vistos, entendidos y preservados.
