Help Pink Collar fund Feminist Art Project

Pink-Collar Gallery is an online space which is dedicated to the promotion of underrepresented groups and using art to promote equality. Created by Sunderland based curator Michaela Wetherell whose particular passions are highlighting female (under)representation within the arts and the relevance of working-class identity.

Pink-Collar is working with Mexican feminist art group Las Iluministas,  a feminist art collective whose purpose is to exhibit Mexican feminist art, connect networks of feminist artists, and invite the public to get to know and interact with feminist art.

We want to create two parallel online exhibitions, ten pieces of public art and ten documentary videos - five in Mexico, five in the UK - exploring how femicide is portrayed in the mass media.

Femicide is increasing in Mexico at a record rate, and in the UK one woman is killed by a partner or ex-partner every three days. Globally, rates of femicide have increased so much since the onset of Covid-19 social distancing measures that gender-based violence is known as ‘the shadow pandemic’. When a woman's life is taken, so much more is taken from her: her name, her story, her interests, her identity, her hopes and dreams. This happens not just at the moment when she is killed, but when her murder is represented in mass media if it is represented at all. Revictimising, shaming, blaming and unnaming, or making a grotesque spectacle of murdered women is common in both Mexico and the UK, and we want artists to respond to this from their own cultural locations.

We need your help to get the ball rolling on this project, to show funders and art organisations this is an important project to fund. The arts are in a decline due to the global Pandemic and this project will help keep artists and creative freelancers in their jobs. This money will be used to pay one artist, so if we get more than the target more artists will be paid. We want to pay each artist £500 for their work. If we receive more than £500 in this fundraiser, we will be able to pay more artists.

Art is an incredible activist tool and we know this project will spread awareness of femicide and support female-identifying artists.

Thank you for supporting this project follow Las_iluministas and Pink-Collar Gallery on Instagram to get updates on this project as we will be having online exhibitions, information about the public artwork and what artists we select.
