Help Peter fight Leukaemia

Donation protected
Hi everyone. My name is Marta, and I’m creating this GoFundMe page to help raise funds and awareness about my nephew Piotr.

INTRODUCTION
Piotr (we call him Peter) is 10 years old and lives in Cielcza, Poland, with his dad Tomek, mum Jola and his little brother Igor. He loves playing football, playing video games and building Lego with his little brother Igor.
Peter is a very kind and bright kid, doing very well at school. He wants to be a footballer when he grows up!

Peter has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. This is a type of blood cancer that starts from young white blood cells with infiltrates of granulocytic sarcoma in the bone marrow. Chemotherapy is the main treatment, followed by a bone marrow transplant.

PETER’S CONDITION AND TREATMENT
Peter was admitted to the Oncology and Haematology hospital in Poznań on March 7th. Peter’s condition deteriorated rapidly with lumps beginning to appear on his temples and scalp. Despite strong painkillers, including Morphine, Peter was in severe pain, and understandably, this was heart-breaking for his parents to watch. He was placed in an isolation ward; only his mum was allowed to stay with him, with the rest of the family communicating via a sealed window.

Chemotherapy is tough on anyone with horrendous side effects, but even more so on a child who doesn’t understand what is happening. Peter’s only hope for a cure is a bone marrow transplant. However, this cannot happen until he completes his chemotherapy treatment. Peter has undergone 4 rounds of chemotherapy, and we hope the bone marrow transplant will be done soon.

Peter has had numerous painful tests and procedures, one of which was a lumber puncture to test his bone marrow. Peter’s results were checked against the Bone Marrow Donor Register, and thankfully, a match has been found!!

They say the treatment after the bone marrow transplant can be up to one year or two and he’ll be under control of the transplant team. His immune system will be like a newborn, so he will need all his immunisation done again.

IMPACT ON FAMILY
Peter has been in the hospital since March, he is receiving intensive chemotherapy, already his treatment has been delayed due to contracting infections.

As you can well imagine this diagnosis knocked Peter’s family off their feet! How could this be happening to their healthy boy who loved to run around and play football. The family’s normal life came to a halt and all their future plans forgotten as they continue fighting for Peter’s life.

Peter’s mum can no longer work as Peter needs his mum with him all the time as he is frightened but trying to be strong. Understandably little Igor is confused and tearful and is missing his big brother.

Peter’s Leukaemia is a huge challenge for them as a family, coping with the emotional trauma as well as the practical and financial issues, Jola had to resign from her job as the intensive treatment in hospital always requires the presence of his mum.

ONGOING SUPPORT
After the transplant, Peter’s recovery will be slow, perhaps up to two years, during this time, Peter will be under the constant supervision of the transplant team. Peter’s immune system will be very immature, and he will have to take all his childhood vaccinations again, he will continue to be on complex medication to stay healthy and prevent infections. This is all very costly in Poland.

We pray Peter will undergo a bone marrow transplant soon. Peter’s family are making the Polish people aware of his situation, encouraging them to sign up on the Bone Marrow register, this will increase the chances of Peter and also other sick people finding a genetic twin to increase their chances of finding a donor. Therefore, we ask you all to seriously consider becoming a bone marrow donor. Taking the donor’s marrow is practically painless and could save someone's life.
Support will include travel to hospital together with drugs and help with basic living costs whilst mum Jola looks after Peter on his long road to recovery.

GOALS
Our goals are to:
1. Raise awareness of the devasting impact that a childhood Leukaemia diagnosis can have on families
2. Encourage people to sign up for the bone marrow register
3. Help Peter and his family financially with medications, hospital travel costs and basic living expenses.

Please support us in raising funds by donating, sharing, or holding fundraising events and, importantly, having discussions about becoming a donor and spreading awareness of this disease.

FUNDRAISING TARGET
Our fundraising target is £10,000. Approximately half of this is being raised in Poland.

Disclaimer

Unfortunately, Gofundme.com doesn’t operate in Poland. I live in the UK, so I will be personally responsible for delivering the funds outside of GoFundMe and outlining a transparent withdrawal plan on my fundraiser story.

Thank you for your generous support.
