Help People Breathe: Oxygen For Tulsipur

Dear Friends

14 died in the hospital for the lack of Oxygen,” a national Newspaper headline wrote this morning.,

Do we just allow people to die?,” asked a Ward Chair in Tulsipur, Dang, a city in Western Nepal  - for the local hospital simply wasn’t able to take in more patients due to lack of oxygen. Tulsipur is where  I work as an Advisor to the Municipality. As more and more people call for help, local elected officials and healthcare workers, after relentless 3 weeks of work, are now  frustrated, exhausted and feel helpless.

The Municipality team was expecting to get some oxygen supply early this morning but the team later learnt that those cylinders were diverted to another City, where the cases are equally bad.

Over the last six weeks, the second wave of covid has hit Nepal hard. While international headlines have focused on India, the surge has engulfed Nepal unprepared.

In the last 24 hours alone, over 200 people died of Covid in Nepal. Lack of beds, ICU, Ventilators and Oxygen are killing people.

About 9000 people test positive daily. In a country of about 30 Million, we now have over 100,000 active cases. The positivity rate is almost 50%. In Nepal, 304 people per million are tested positive, even higher than in India which has 240 cases per million.

Under the load, Nepal’s healthcare system has completely collapsed.

In Tulsipur, a city of about 150,000, active cases increased from about 9 in the middle of April to over 1500 now. About 40 people have lost their lives to covid in the last 3 weeks in Tulsipur.

The local hospital in the City doesn’t even have ICU beds. Only 5 ICU beds available are at Temporary Covid Hospital.

Given the urgency of the situation, we need to find ways to get Oxygen Cylinders and Oxygen Concentrators and PCR Machine for testing.

We would like to be able to install about 10-20 Oxygen concentrators immediately so we can save lives.

Therefore, I am sending this request asking you to consider making a donation, One Oxygen Concentrator is likely to cost about US$ 1100.  Whatever amount you can donate will be helpful. I would appreciate if you can also send this link to your friends and family and encourage them to support.

Thank you for your compassion and kindness.

Stay Safe and Healthy.

Sincerely,

Shisir Khanal
