<div>Thirty-six years ago, our dear friend Fernanda Restrepo’s brothers were kidnapped, tortured, murdered, and disappeared at the hands of the Ecuadorian police. Along with her father, Pedro Restrepo, she has not stopped looking for them. In an interview, Pedro commented that every night, before going to bed, he asks himself, “What did I do today to find my boys?”. His fight became the demand of a country; his voice, that of the thousands of families in Latin America whose children have been assassinated by the police. It only takes a quick Google search to understand his legacy in the Latin American fight for human rights. Fernanda’s documentary, which premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA), narrates the story of their search and the importance of keeping memory alive.

<div>At 81 years old, “papaito,” as Fernanda calls Pedro, has spent twenty months in an intensive care unit (ICU) at a public hospital, fighting a respiratory illness. His wish is to come back home for the remainder of his life. This campaign aims to help Fernanda finance at-home care for him and provide him the best quality of life possible next to his wife, Martha, Fernanda, his son-in-law Oliver, and his only grandson, Pedro Amaru. The family has spent all their savings on his treatment and needs our support. The cost of keeping him under round-the-clock specialized care is high in a country with no precedent in setting ICUs at home. Fernanda is a powerhouse who has made this logistically feasible, and with our help, she can make it happen. She needs to cover the expenses of medical treatment, including several specialized nurses in three shifts, and the high cost of the installation and monitoring of the ICU at home. On average, this amounts to more than $10,000 a month. We ask you to help us raise the equivalent of five months of Pedro’s life at home.

<div>Hace 36 años, los hermanos de nuestra querida amiga, Fernanda Restrepo, fueron secuestrados, torturados, asesinados y desaparecidos en manos de la policía ecuatoriana. Fernanda y Pedro, su papá, han llevado adelante una lucha incansable en su búsqueda. En una entrevista, Pedro comentó que cada noche, antes de acostarse, se preguntaba a sí mismo: “¿Qué he hecho hoy para encontrar a mis hijos?”. Su lucha se ha convertido en la demanda de todo un país; su voz se ha transformado en la de miles de familias latinoamericanas cuyos hijos e hijas han sido asesinadxs por la fuerza policial. Basta con hacer una búsqueda rápida en Google para entender el legado de Pedro Restrepo en lo que respecta a la lucha por los derechos humanos en Latinoamérica. El documental de Fernanda, presentado en IDFA, uno de los más importantes festivales de cine documental en el mundo, cuenta la historia de su búsqueda y de la importancia de mantener viva la memoria.

<div>A sus 81 años, “papaíto”, como llama cariñosamente Fernanda a su padre, ha pasado un año y ocho meses en cuidados intensivos en un hospital público, batallando contra una insuficiencia respiratoria crónica, que lo mantiene conectado a un ventilador mecánico. Su deseo es regresar a su hogar para pasar ahí el tiempo que le quede de vida. Esta campaña busca ayudar a Fernanda a financiar la vuelta a casa de Pedro con los cuidados de salud necesarios para un paciente crónico, de tal forma que tenga la mejor calidad de vida posible y pueda estar al lado de su esposa Martha, de su yerno Oliver, de su nieto Pedro Amaru, y de su hija Fernanda. La familia ha invertido los ahorros de toda su vida para garantizar el tratamiento médico de Pedro y por ello ahora necesitan de nuestra ayuda. Los costos para mantener a Pedro con cuidados especializados continuos en casa son muy elevados, sin embargo, Fernanda ha logrado encontrar una logística viable y, con nuestra ayuda, estos cuidados intensivos pueden llevarse a cabo. Las necesidades de cobertura de gastos incluyen el tratamiento médico, auxiliares de enfermería en tres turnos rotativos y la instalación de una unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI) con el respectivo monitoreo. En promedio, el costo mensual asciende a los diez mil dólares. Les pedimos su ayuda a fin de recaudar el equivalente a cinco meses para mantener a Pedro en casa, con todos los cuidados necesarios.
