Help Paula Heal After Loss and Hardship

My name is Laurie; I'm one of many people who work at our local jail whose days are brightened and workloads lightened by an amazing, hard- working nurse, Paula Sandvig.

On my first day back to work last week, I noticed how exhausted and sad Paula looked, and asked if everything was ok. She nodded and whispered, “I’m ok.” When I added that she didn’t look ok, she explained that her husband and best friend, Kevin, had passed away suddenly while on a cruise they had won. Kevin had limited mobility and had been oxygen dependent from Covid-related cardiac disease for several years. Paula has been his primary caregiver and breadwinner throughout his illness, and though utterly exhausted, she always saw the bright side of her situation. When I asked her why she was back to work so soon she replied, “I have no choice; I’m drowning in medical bills and Kevin’s passing on the ship only added to the expenses.” She confided that she was barely hanging on.

Paula is that woman who welcomes the new nurses with open arms and a big smile; she’s that nurse who doesn’t brush you off when you need help; she’s that nurse who pats you on the back and tells you, “I got you, Mate.” Now Paula needs us, I hope you will consider making a donation; whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated.
