<div>Wat een ontspannen gezinsvakantie had moeten zijn, eindigde in een nachtmerrie. Na ruim een week samen genieten, kreeg Paul op de laatste twee dagen plotseling een ondraaglijke hoofdpijn. Toen ik hem aantrof, probeerde hij iets te zeggen, maar er kwamen geen woorden uit. In paniek bracht ik hem naar het ziekenhuis, waar bleek dat hij een ernstige hersenbloeding had. De artsen gaven hem <strong>50/50 kans om het te overleven</strong>. Terwijl ik naast zijn bed zat, sloeg de realiteit in: <strong>wat als ik hem kwijtraak</strong>? Voor het eerst moest ik nadenken over een leven zonder Paul – een gedachte die me volledig verlamde.

<div>Wat volgde, was een maandenlange strijd tussen leven en dood, waarin Paul meerdere hersenbloedingen kreeg en zelfs werd opgegeven. Onze lieve jongens (10, 9 en 7 jaar) moesten op een gegeven moment met spoed naar Colombia komen om afscheid van hem te nemen. Maar tegen alle verwachtingen in gaf Paul een teken van leven – en begon een onzekere, zware weg naar herstel.

<div><strong>Een medisch gevecht vol tegenslagen</strong>

<div>Paul werd op <strong>18 november 2024</strong> met spoed opgenomen in Curaçao. Een <strong>sinustrombose </strong>en een <strong>hersenbloeding</strong> werden vastgesteld. De druk op zijn hersenen was zo groot dat artsen een deel van zijn schedel moesten verwijderen om zijn leven te redden.

<div>Vanwege de ernst van zijn situatie werd hij op <strong>20 november</strong> per medische vlucht overgebracht naar Bogotá, Colombia. Daar volgde <strong>complicatie na complicatie</strong>:
</div>
<div>- Een <strong>dubbele longontsteking</strong>
</div>
<div>- Een <strong>miltinfarct</strong>
</div>
<div>- Op <strong>7 december </strong>een tweede en derde <strong>hersenbloeding</strong> (subarachnoïdale bloeding)

<div>De situatie was kritiek. Artsen zagen geen uitweg meer en stelden ons voor een hartverscheurende keuze toen zij een <strong>interne hersenbloeding</strong> vaststelden: <strong>delen van zijn hersenen verwijderen</strong> of afscheid nemen. Maar dit was geen leven dat Paul gewild zou hebben, en de artsen zagen geen hoop op een menswaardig bestaan.

<div>Op <strong>8 december </strong>moesten onze kinderen naar Colombia komen om <strong>afscheid te nemen</strong> van hun vader. Paul werd tot <strong>32 graden </strong>gekoeld in de hoop dat de kinderen op tijd zouden zijn. Maar op <strong>9 december </strong>gebeurde het ondenkbare: een teken van leven. Een arts zag <strong>1% kans</strong> en besloot ervoor te vechten.

<div>Vanaf dat moment volgde een lange en onzekere weg:
</div>
<div>- Vaatkrampen in zijn hersenen, met een spoedoperatie als gevolg
</div>
<div>- Drie <strong>septische shocks </strong>op één ochtend
</div>
<div>- Een hardnekkige infectie (Klebsiella)
</div>
<div>- Een lange periode van beademing en sedatie
</div>

<div>Halverwege januari 2025 kwam Paul langzaam uit zijn diepe coma en werd hij teruggevlogen naar Nederland.

<div><strong>Een nieuw leven vol uitdagingen</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>Na een lange medische reis via Jamaica en Canada kwam Paul op <strong>24 januari 2025</strong> aan in Nederland. Hij werd direct opgenomen op de IC van het Maasstad Ziekenhuis, later in het Erasmus MC voor de operatie om zijn schedel terug te plaatsen, en nu verblijft hij in een revalidatiecentrum in Den Haag.

<div>Op dit moment vecht Paul keihard om terug te komen. Hij heeft te maken met:

<div>- <strong>Eenzijdige verlamming (rechts)</strong>
</div>
<div>- <strong>Ernstige slikproblemen (dysfagie)</strong>

<div>- <strong>Taalstoornis (afasie)</strong>

<div>De toekomst is onzeker, maar we geven niet op. Dag in, dag uit werkt Paul keihard met artsen en therapeuten om zoveel mogelijk functies terug te krijgen. We weten niet hoe ver zijn herstel zal gaan, maar we zullen er alles aan doen om hem de beste kansen te geven.

<div><strong>Waarom we hulp nodig hebben</strong>

<div>Paul zal <strong>nog lange tijd niet kunnen werken</strong>, en de toekomst is onzeker. Onze drie kinderen, die hun vader bijna verloren, zien hem nu in een compleet andere toestand. Ondertussen stapelen de financiële zorgen zich op.

<div>Paul werkte als advocaat en was de hoofdkostwinner van ons gezin. Onze vaste lasten zijn afgestemd op twee werkende ouders, en de plotselinge uitval van zijn inkomen heeft enorme impact op ons dagelijks leven.

<div>We willen niets liever dan Paul de zorg en ondersteuning geven die hij nodig heeft. Maar de kosten blijven oplopen, en zonder extra hulp kunnen we ons huis en onze stabiliteit verliezen.

<div>We hebben een streefbedrag van <strong>€ 80.000</strong>. Dat klinkt als veel – en dat is het ook – maar het is nodig om Paul de intensieve revalidatie te geven die hij verdient en om onze drie jongens een stabiel thuis te bieden in deze onzekere tijd.

<div>Met deze crowdfunding hopen we dit bedrag op te halen voor twee essentiële doelen:

<div>- <strong>€ 30.000</strong> voor revalidatie bij <strong>TrainM</strong>, het meest innovatieve neurorevalidatiecentrum van Europa. Hier krijgt Paul de intensieve therapieën die hij nodig heeft om opnieuw te leren bewegen, communiceren en functioneren. Jammer genoeg wordt deze gespecialiseerde zorg niet vergoed door de verzekeraar.

<div>- <strong>€ 50.000</strong> om nog minimaal een jaar in ons huis te kunnen blijven wonen. Deze periode is cruciaal om duidelijk te krijgen wat Paul in de toekomst wel of niet zelfstandig zal kunnen. Tot die tijd willen we onze drie jongens een zo stabiel mogelijk bestaan bieden terwijl hun vader vecht voor een zo goed mogelijk herstel.

<div>What was meant to be a relaxing family vacation turned into a nightmare. After more than a week of enjoying time together, Paul suddenly developed unbearable headaches in the last two days. When I found him, he tried to speak, but no words came out. In panic, I rushed him to the hospital, where doctors discovered a severe brain hemorrhage. They gave him a <strong>50/50 chance of survival</strong>. As I sat by his bed, the reality hit: <strong>what if I lose him</strong>? For the first time, I had to imagine a life without Paul – a thought that completely paralyzed me.

<div>What followed was a months-long battle between life and death. Paul suffered multiple brain bleeds and was even declared beyond hope. Our three dear boys (10, 9, and 7) had to be rushed to Colombia to say goodbye. But against all odds, Paul gave a sign of life – and began an uncertain, difficult road to recovery.

<div><strong>A medical fight full of setbacks</strong>

<div>Paul was urgently admitted to the hospital in Curaçao on <strong>November 18, 2024</strong>. He was diagnosed with a <strong>sinus thrombosis</strong> and <strong>brain hemorrhage</strong>. The pressure on his brain was so intense that part of his skull had to be removed to save his life.

</div>
<div>Due to the severity of his condition, he was airlifted to Bogotá, Colombia, on <strong>November 20</strong>. What followed were <strong>one complication after another</strong>:
</div>
<div>- A <strong>double pneumonia</strong>
</div>
<div>- A <strong>splenic infarction</strong>
</div>
<div>- On <strong>December 7</strong>, a second and third <strong>brain hemorrhage</strong> (subarachnoid)

<div>His condition was critical. Doctors saw no way out and gave us a heartbreaking choice after an <strong>internal brain hemorrhage</strong>: <strong>remove parts of his brain</strong> or say goodbye. But this was not a life Paul would have wanted, and the doctors saw no hope for a dignified future.

</div>
<div>On <strong>December 8</strong>, our children had to fly to Colombia to <strong>say goodbye</strong> to their father. Paul was cooled down to <strong>32 degrees Celsius</strong> in the hope the children would arrive in time. But on <strong>December 9</strong>, the unthinkable happened: a sign of life. A doctor saw a <strong>1% chance</strong> and chose to fight for it.

<div>From that moment, a long and uncertain path began:

<div>- Cerebral vasospasms, resulting in emergency surgery
</div>
<div>- Three <strong>septic shocks </strong>in a single morning
</div>
<div>- A persistent infection (Klebsiella)

<div>- Weeks of sedation and mechanical ventilation

<div>Mid January 2025, Paul slowly began to wake up and was flown back to the Netherlands.

<div><strong>A new life full of challenges</strong>
</div>

<div>After a long medical journey through Jamaica and Canada, Paul arrived in the Netherlands on <strong>January 24, 2025</strong>. He was immediately admitted to intensive care at Maasstad Hospital, later transferred to Erasmus MC for skull replacement surgery, and is now in a rehabilitation center in The Hague.

<div>Paul is fighting hard to come back. He’s dealing with:

<div>- <strong>Right-sided paralysis</strong>
</div>
<div>- <strong>Severe swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)</strong>

<div>The future is uncertain, but we’re not giving up. Every day, Paul works with doctors and therapists to recover as much function as possible. We don’t know how far his recovery will go, but we’re doing everything we can to give him the best possible chance.

<div>Paul will not be able to work for a long time, and our future is uncertain. Our three children, who nearly lost their father, now see him in a completely different condition. Meanwhile, financial worries keep piling up.

<div>Paul worked as a lawyer and was our family’s main provider. Our living expenses are based on two working parents, and the sudden loss of his income has a huge impact on our daily life.

<div>We want nothing more than to give Paul the care and support he needs. But the costs keep rising, and without extra help, we risk losing our home and stability.
