<div>Hi my name is Liv. I am writing this on behalf of my beloved older brother, Paul Caiafa, his wife, and their four beautiful children.

<div>On Wednesday, 22 April 2026, Paul went into a Melbourne hospital for his second brain surgery to remove a benign tumour near his brain stem. Before this day, Paul was fit, healthy, and full of life. Tragically, the surgery became highly complicated, lasting an agonising 14 hours. During the procedure, Paul woke up and also suffered a catastrophic stroke.

<div><strong>The Current Reality</strong>
</div>
<div>Paul has now been fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Melbourne for over three months.

</div>
<div><strong>The Physical Toll</strong>:
</div>
<div>He is currently paralysed from the neck down. His spinal cord is undamaged, but the stroke caused severe brain neuron damage.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>The Medical Setup: </strong>
</div>
<div>He relies on a brain stent to manage intracranial swelling and is now peg-fed.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Communication: </strong>
</div>
<div>A tracheostomy tube prevents him from speaking. He communicates entirely through eye movements and by us lip-reading his words.
</div>

</div>
<div>Despite these overwhelming odds, Paul is a fighter. Because his spinal cord is intact, we firmly believe his brain can forge new neural pathways. He can rebuild, but he needs time, intensive rehabilitation, and his family by his side.
</div>

<div><strong>The Financial Burden</strong>
</div>
<div>Paul and his wife have completely exhausted all of their paid work leave. Paul is a devoted father and husband, and even from his ICU bed, he is constantly stressed, wondering how he will provide for his family. While he wants to access his superannuation, the process has proven incredibly difficult because he cannot speak or physically sign paperwork.

<div>To make matters harder, Paul’s family lives in regional Victoria (Shepparton). Traveling to the Melbourne ICU takes over 3 hours each way via regional trains and trams. This distance makes it emotionally and financially draining for his wife and kids to give him the bedside presence he desperately needs.
