Help Pat et Julie who lost their home in the flood

On Saturday April 27th, due to high water levels in the river, a permanent man-made dyke broke in Ste-Marthe-sur-le-Lac (suburb of Montreal, QC).  My brother, his wife and their 3 boys who live about 10 houses up the road from this dyke, had less than 10 minutes to evacuate their house.  They left with only the clothes on their backs and very few belongings.

I am thankful that this happened around 7:30 pm and everyone in the community evacuated to safety; had it happened in the middle of night, it would have been even more catastrophic.  My brother described the scene as apocalyptic, saying he could see the wave of water in his rear-view mirror as he was leaving his home.  See how quickly the water moved up the road in the following link, what you see floating are recycling bins:

The lower level of my brother's house was completely submerged (about 8 feet of water) and the whole area is now called the "swimming pool".  It will be weeks/months until the cleanup efforts are completed and it is strongly believed that the house will be a total loss.  Due to the sewers overflowing and the stagnant waters, there is little that will be recoverable.   

The family needs to rebuild their life.  Family and friends are helping but due to the uncertainly of the future, they have to setup in a new home.  They have found temporary housing (thanks to one of my sister's amazing friends) but need to some basic furniture, fridge, dishes, towels, clothes, etc...  They are starting from scratch!

I am incapable of estimating how much they need to get back on their feet but it will be several thousand dollars.  The Red Cross has been providing much needed support with food and emergency clothing but the government will not providing as much financial support as is needed (and who know how long it will take) so it's a very stressful time for the family.

My brother is an amazing man, hard-working, and truly dedicated to his wife and three boys.  I am far away and can't be there with him to provide direct support so this is the only way I could think to help.  I would be so grateful for even the smallest donation to help Pat and his family.  Thank you!

Samedi le 27 avril, la crue des eaux de la rivière a causé une brèche dans la digue à Ste-Marthe-sur-le-Lac.  Mon frère, sa femme ainsi que leur 3 fils, qui habitent sur la rue à environ 10 maisons de la digue, n'ont eu que 10 minutes pour évacuer leur residence.  Ils ont quitté avec les vetements qu'ils portaient et très peu d'items personnels.

C'est une chance incroyable que cet événement se soit passé vers 19:30 hres et que tous les habitants de cette communauté soient sains et saufs; si ça s'était passé la nuit, plusieurs vies auraient été perdues.  Mon frere a décrit la scene comme apocalyptique, me racontant qu'il voyait la vague monter vers eux lorsqu'il conduisait pour sortir du quartier.  Voir le lien ci-haut pour une vidéo montrant la rapidité de la montée des eaux.

Le niveau inférieur de la maison est complèment submergé avec environ 2.5 m d'eau et ce quartier s'appelle maintenant la piscine/bassin.  La famille a trouve un logement temporaire grace à des amis de ma soeur mais ils auront besoin de tout remplacer (meubles, réfrigérateur, vaisselle, vêtements, etc...).  Ils repartent a zéro!

Je ne peux évaluer combien d'argent ils auront besoin mais il s'agira sûrement de plusieurs milliers de dollars.  La Croix-Rouge leur a fourni du support en les nourissant et en fournissant des vêtements d'urgence mais le gouvernement ne donnera pas autant de support financier qu'il sera nécessaire (et ça peut etre long) donc c'est très stressant pour la famille.

Mon frère est un type extraordinaire, qui travaille très fort and est dédié à sa femme et ses trois garcons.  J'habite loin et je ne peux l'aider directement alors j'ai pensé à une campagne pour lui ramasser des fonds.  Tout don qui pourrait aider Pat et sa famille serait très apprecié.  Merci!
