Help out-of-work Dad Support Family of 7

by Leslie Howle, Organizer
I did a GoFundMe for one of my students whose father was laid off from his job when Covid hit last March, and am posting again today as the situation is once again dire. The family is Albanian, and there are five children from ages 2 to 16.  We raised enough money to pay their rent for one month last spring, and a few of our kind neighbors hired Alush, the father, to do a couple odd jobs like helping them move or do some painting. He got unemployment for awhile, but that has ended.  He has been looking for work since March.  He has applied at everywhere from Amazon to a plumbing company.

Alush was a plumber in Albania, but he would have to go to school and get recertified to become a plumber here. I The crux of the problem is that his English is still very limited. He is studying English online but it is slow going.

His daughter, my student, picked up English quickly at school and her grades made the honor roll. She is a good student and one of the nicest kids I’ve met; always kind and helpful to her classmates. She has just turned 16 and is starting her junior year this fall feeling the weight of their insecurity. Dad has been spending his time job hunting and helping mom care for the children since he was laid off, so his English is not improving very fast.

Alush was working as a custodian at a downtown hotel for over a year before he was laid off. Hotels are not doing very well since Covid hit as people aren’t traveling. Things are getting dire for them again as Dad’s unemployment has run out and they are not eligible for any social services because he was sponsored to come here by his brother. I took him to WorkForce and they were unable to help him at all.

If any of you know of a job that Alush might be able to be trained to do where he can improve his English, please let me know here. They are good people, and all Alush wants to do it find a way to sustainably support his family. He has an amazing work ethic, but is insecure about his English. I am hoping that our awesome community  can help the family pay October/November rent while he continues to look for work. Thanks so much!
