<div>On January 12, 2026 Alex was driving to visit some clients. My husband is our breadwinner, he does upholstery for boats. He did not make it to the clients. He was stopped by CBP officers on I-75 near Weston. I suspect he was targeted because he decorated his truck with national symbols, and that was a hint for law enforcement that he is an immigrant.

<div>Officers accused Alex of being “illegal” despite the fact that he has a legal status. We came to the US on a visa in 2017, he is a derivative applicant on my asylum application. We did everything right and on time. We followed the law. The United States Immigration Services would not call us for an asylum interview for 9 years, because they have a huge backlog. We were patiently waiting thinking that we are safe here.

<div>Alex had all the paperwork with him. He has no criminal record. He pays taxes. But the CBP officers did not care. They probably needed to meet their arrest goals for the day. So they sent him to the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center. He is detained for already two weeks for no good reason.

<div>Alex and I had suffered from infertility for 14 years. Only after fleeing our country and finding peace and advanced medical care in the US were we finally able to have our little boys. They are now ages 3 and 5 years old. They are our miracles. Alex is a great dad.

<div>He was torn away from me and our sons. The boys ask me when daddy will come home every day. We are struggling financially, because Alex is our main breadwinner.

<div>Legal bills pile up, and I have to pay rent, and save money for the bond. It’s tough. Not only financially, but physically and emotionally. I have to pretend that everything is ok in front of my 5 y.o. and 3 y.o. I have to show up at my job. I now have to come to Alex’s shop to do some sewing so that his clients do not notice that something is wrong.

<div>When Alex calls me from the detention center and tells me how cold it is there, how noisy it is there (300 people and generators), how some of his cellmates are dangerous criminals and how prison food tastes, I try not to cry.

<div>His bond hearing is coming up, and I do not know what would the bond be. Alex’s lawyer says that it can be $1,000 or $15,000. Lots of judges now deny bonds because having an immigrant indefinitely detained breaks people and they self-deport out of desperation.

<div>If Alex is denied bond, we would like to file a lawsuit called “Habeas corpus”, and this costs another $5,000.
