Help our Students Reach the Stars!

Who are we?
Boze Elementary is located in east Tacoma, WA.  This school is a 84% free and reduced lunch population and a 56% English language learner population.  Through a partnership with the non-profit, Technology Access Foundation , Boze Elementary has transformed to a fully functioning Project Based Learning (PBL) environment to close the gap of minority and economically challenged students in STEAM education.

TAFat Saghaile is a public Federal Way 6th-12th project based learning school co-run by Technology Access Foundation.  They have a 70% free and reduced lunch population.  The entire 6th grade team will be participating in this opportunity.
Both schools that will be involved, Boze Elementary and TAF at Saghalie are diverse high needs, Title 1 public schools.

Our students come from a world where real world, hands on, S.T.E.A.M. experiences in school are new, valuable, and precious opportunities.  The incredible experience offered through the Student Spaceflight Experiment Program (SSEP) , do not easily come our way.  The students at Boze Elementary and TAF@Saghaile are in love with the idea of gravity, space, and exploration.  The SSEP would be an opportunity for our scholars to experiment in a real micro-gravity lab where our students can collaborate in small groups and across grade levels to test out and visualize how gravity affects life here on earth.

As per Technology Access Foundation’s mission and vision statements, the students from both schools will gain necessary knowledge to reach their grade-level standards by learning through thematic, cross-curricular units of study that meet the needs and strengths of every student while introducing them to college and career paths and 21st century skills for an exceptional future.  As Boze Elementary's project based learning instructional coach, my job is to get as many meaningful opportunities into the hands of my teachers and students as possible.

What We Need
Bringing in high-tech, real world experiences such as the one through SSEP unfortunately come with a steep price tag. The entire micro-gravity lab, which will serve over 300 students grades 4th-6th, and the cost for sending the chosen experiments to the International Space Station via NASA, is $24,000.  In order to  participate, our community is responsible for raising at least $2,500 to make this experience possible.  Any money raised will directly go to fund the micro-gravity lab and the cost of the space flight to the International Space Station.   Any extra funding will help SSEP with bearing their burden of fundraising the rest of the money.

The Impact
By participating in the SSEP micro-gravity lab, our students will have the opportunity to access a program that often times is taken for granted by their wealthy counter parts be able to have experiences and knowledge equally to and surpassing other schools and peers who do not need to ask for help raising funds. Without help from people like you, this will not happen.

Boze Elementary will start their third year as a project based learning school in the 2017/2018 school year.  So far we have been able to secure community experts and donations to help on a wide range of projects such as website development for our student school store, gardens to explore the integral role pollinators play in our ecosystem, designing robots that could help after a natural disaster, creating blueprints for what we want our new school to look like, and inventions to help community members based on animal adaptations.  We would be honored to add the SSEP experience to our portfolio as a flourishing educational institute.

Our students are thriving in a project based learning environment. Office referrals are down,  collaborative and successful projects are up, and our students and teachers want to be at school.  An experience such as this will be able to bring our project based learning to the next level.

We will need to raise the $2500 for our community before August 28th, 2017 if we want to participate in this amazing opportunity.

We would be extremely grateful for any donation that you can offer and will highlight donors and their messages to our students on our school webpage as champions of high quality S.T.E.A.M. experiences for all! Show our scholars that you care about them and do not believe that funding should be a barrier to reaching for the stars!
