Please Help Our Mom Walk Again!

Hi, my name is Gary. Me and my sister Dionne humbly ask for your help in raising money for our Mum, Susan Fenech-Soler.

Seven years ago, our mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she had surgery to remove and radiation to treat. Fortunately, after many check-ups she was eventually given the all-clear. However, a couple of years after that our father, her husband, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and subsequently she turned all her focus onto him and his health.

Around the beginning of 2020 she started to suffer from occasional pains and numbness in her legs but thought nothing of it and powered on. Then Covid hit, and over the year that her and my father were in lockdown her health and mobility declined quickly, to the point that she had to depend on a walker and subsequently a wheelchair to get around. Despite this she was still focused on our father, as his health too was declining and all she could do was focus on him. Sadly, we lost our dad in January 2022.

That brings us up to the present and over the last few weeks mom has been having MRIs, CT scans and Blood tests. The doctors have discovered a large tumour pressing against her 6th and 7th vertebrae and informed us that this needs to be removed as soon as possible. Once removed, they will investigate further to see if it is in fact cancerous and if she will need additional treatment alongside physiotherapy to get her walking again.

Our mum was born in Trinidad and came to the UK as a young adult to study nursing where she qualified as a Registered Nurse. She dedicated much of her life to caring for her patients and the elderly both in the UK and Trinidad. Mum has now been living in Trinidad for 32 years and urgently needs to have this surgery and treatment in Trinidad and it is not covered under her health insurance. We have been informed that her medical bills could be in excess TT$270,500.00 (£35,000.00).

This surgery will be life changing for our mum (without it she will not be able to walk again). We pray it will give her back her mobility and for us as a family to have more time with her. After mum’s many years of dedication and devotion to the sick, elderly and their families we ask for help so that she can be cared for and given a chance to have many more years of good health.

Once the surgery is completed, they will be taking a biopsy to investigate further and ascertain if the tumour is cancerous and a Multiple Myeloma.
