The Background


A few years ago dear mom, Dee, began having health problems associated with aging and could no longer live comfortably or safely in her apartment.  After physical therapy and treatment, she was able to live independently but needed the assistance and monitoring provided by a senior living community. After a thorough search,  she found an excellent quality retirement community that offers independent living with the option of assisted living. It is a clean and pleasant apartment complex, with paved, landscaped paths she can walk on using her walker, resident gardens which she lovingly tends, includes one nourishing meal per day in their dining hall, numerous social activities and a daily check-in on her. She has made new friends and considers this a great place to live.


The Problem



Initially she was able to afford her home on her social security check, her sole source of income, but we found that unexpected expenses such as increases in prescription costs and transportation were eating up too much of that budget.  In addition, her rent just increased by $123.00 per month . My sister and I do not have the resources to assist her anymore. My sister, who lives nearby and helps as she can with errands and expenses, has asked Dee to come and live with her. However,  Dee and we know this would NOT be best for her, as my sister and her husband live out in the country and work full time, so Dee would not have close proximity to her friends, activities,  or medical facilities, thereby making her more dependent and socially isolated! Research shows that those circumstances can cause depression, illness, and quick decline in the elderly.


What We Are Hoping For


We are seeking donations within the next few weeks to raise enough  to keep Dee where she is happy and thriving at least for another year, when she will have lived there long enough to apply for financial assistance at the community. Please help us keep our mother where she wants to be. She has given so very much to us – and to others through her volunteer work and bright, friendly interactions with people - through the years!
