Can teaching entrepreneurship skills help Ugandans break the cycle of poverty and youth unemployment?

Uganda is Africa’s, and the world’s second youngest country with a median age of just 16.

It is the most youthful country in East Africa, with over 20 million young people. About 55% of the total population is aged 18 years and below, and about 80 % of the population is below the age of 35 years.

The government of Uganda considers education a basic human right. Many Ugandans believed that education is the solution to reducing poverty.

The guards at the ADRA compound in Kampala also strongly believe that education is THE solution to reducing poverty.

However, with the very high cost of living in Kampala, and the extremely low salaries for security guards in Uganda, Keith and his fellow guards simply cannot afford to meet the high cost of education in Kampala!

Some of the guards had to default in borrowing money from micro-finance institutions (with really high-interest rates) or children simply drop-out of school.

The cycle of poverty continues.

The 4 guards (Keith, Mark, Peter, Jackson) and one grounds cleaner (Andrew) had talked to me on so many occasions --- sharing their hopes and dreams for their children and their children's ambitions and goals.

We have wrestled with our thoughts for sustainable solutions.

Solutions that would provide their children with education, acquired vocational skills and dignity (not charity dependency).

This GoFundMe campaign is to help Keith, Mark, Peter, Jackson and Andrew gain extra income, build their children's future and overcome charity dependency through market-driven, sustainable and diversified family-run businesses.

After several consultations with ADRA Uganda's program and social business specialists, we have identified solid proposals for family-run businesses (click on each word below for links and more information):
