Our sweet 2-year-old granddaughter was rushed from Farmington, NM to Albuquerque by emergency flight after developing a severe infection from a cyst caused by an infected umbilical tracheal cyst.

She arrived at Presbyterian Hospital, but after two days of waiting — with no decisive action and no surgery — her condition worsened. Shockingly, she was discharged still in pain and without the treatment she urgently needed. Her mother knew that something was still wrong and took her straight to UNM Hospital. The doctor there was furious, telling us she should never have been released. He immediately began new testing and started preparing for the surgery she needed days ago — surgery that could save her life.

She had a minor surgery today and has a drain bag at her belly button. She will need two more surgeries, one before she is released from the hospital and another one later on down the road.

Now, our family is facing more than just fear for her health. My son-in-law will need to travel from Farmington to Albuquerque to be with his wife and daughter. He will likely be out of work for some time. This means they will need help covering:

Rent & utilities back home so they don’t lose their housing

Temporary lodging in Albuquerque during surgery and recovery

Food and transportation while away from work

Other unexpected expenses during this medical emergency
