Help Our German Culture Survive in Metro Detroit!

Our Club needs your assistance!

First, a little background on our Club.  Carpathia Club is a not-for-profit (501c7) cultural organization established in 1913, so we have been part of Metro Detroit for over 100 years! We are a family-oriented cultural club that welcomes everyone. In today's digital world, it is nice to have a place to meet and get to know each other.

Started as the Carpathia Choir (Carpathia Singing Society), the Club has grown to include a variety of interests including dance groups, soccer, sportsmen’s group, brass musicians, German school, ladies’ group, groups for seniors - and the club still has an excellent choir.

The Donauschwaben culture has ties with its German background, but it also has its own unique traditions and values which are seen in the Club to this day.

Carpathia Club is a not-for-profit cultural organization representing German and Donauschwaben traditions and language. Donauschwaben are the pioneers that traveled from German regions, often down the Danube (Donau) River, to the far reaches of Austria-Hungary. The land offered opportunity and, after many generations of hard work, became a prosperous region. Like the pioneers in the American West, the Donauschwaben started new lives in a new land to give their families a better future.

Folk dances, songs, recipes and stories from grandparents and great-grandparents are happily shared. People are remembered. Friendships are deepened. Traditions like wearing rosemary at Kirchweih and values like commitment to family are the living history of the Carpathia Club

Now, the reason we’re asking for your assistance.

Due to the pandemic, Carpathia Club events have been extremely limited, and therefore income has also been limited.  Under the leadership of the board, several “allowable” events have been successful (Beer and Brats on the patio, German Food, Blasskapella on the patio, and Friday Fish Fry, etc.).  While these events have been successful, the hall is not making enough income to fund expenses and the Club’s savings are depleting.

We are therefore asking that all members and anyone who are able, donate to this worthy cause so we can continue to provide for our members and the community.

To maintain our Club we are asking to raise $50,000

Funds will be utilized to:

Operate the Club; during the pandemic, the Club has taken many cost savings steps (takeout dinners to order, lowered heat, powered down non-essential devices, reduced cleaning, etc).  The Club still needs to pay for operating expenses; currently the Club spends approximately $10,000 per month to maintain the Club (inside and outside) (utilities, water, taxes, minimal staffing, etc).

Also, there are several urgent maintenance items that need to be addressed:

Washing Machine (needed to wash kitchen linens)- $1,000

Beer cooler in Member’s bar- $3,500; $1,500 (cooler) and materials to rebuild bar ($2,000)

Near Term the following items need to be replaced (as the club resumes normal operation post pandemic):

HVAC (practice room)-$12,000 (not being used today, but will be as club reopens)

Carpeting (13 years towards 15 year life span)- $25,000

                Parking lot repairs- $15,000

Glass Dishwasher- $5,000 (plan to lease)

                Cake room floor repair- $5,000

As a reminder, the Carpathia Club is a not-for-profit 501c7, and therefore donations are not currently tax deductible; the Club is trying to create a tax deductible non-profit.

Please reach into your hearts (and wallets) to assist your Club today!
