Our dear friend and Virginia Oyster Shucking Champion Debra Pratt needs our help in her fight against Breast Cancer and Kidney Failure.
As many you know, Debra has been the women’s oyster shucking competition at the Urbanna Oyster Festival many times and continued on to win the U.S. National competition title at the St. Mary's County Oyster Festival. Deborah has also represented the U.S. in the Oyster Shucking World Championships in Ireland and in 1997, she was second in the world.
For years Debra has brought much joy to many of us as she shucked Oysters perfectly for our enjoyment during the Urbanna Oyster Festival, special events, memorable family occasions and various organizational activities across the state of Virginia and beyond. All of us “oyster loving enthusiasts” have stood and watched in awe of Debra’s incredible ability to so quickly provide us with the perfectly shucked, clean oyster for our enjoyment, all the while entertaining us with wonderful “lessons” on the oyster and proper shucking technique.
On May 5, 2018, Debra was diagnosed with Breast Cancer which was identified during her annual mammogram. As a complication of the anesthesia used during her breast cancer surgery, Debra suffered kidney failure. She now has to fight not just Breast Cancer but kidney failure too. During this time, Debra’s doctors have not allowed her to continue working. As a result of her illnesses medical bills and the expenses of daily living are adding up as she continues treatment. Debra needs our help to pay these mounting bills.
Now it’s up to us through our donations to return the joy and kindness to Debra by helping her with her financial struggles as she continues her fight against Breast Cancer and Kidney failure.
