Help our First Lego League team Get to State!

Donation protected
First Lego League teams embark on several challenges during the school year including a problem solving research project and design solution, a robot build, and programming their robot to run a predetermined course of tasks. They then compete in all categories, as well as in core  values (which emphasize skills such as teamwork, innovation, inclusion, discovery, impact, and fun as a team), at a local qualifier event where they may earn the chance to progress to state championships, then possibly even the national or world championship!

At the Juneau qualifier our team of five IDEA (Interior Distance Education Alaska) homeschool students, ranging from 4th to 8th grade, earned ourselves the Robot Design Award with an efficient and sturdy robot, and an invitation to join others teams in Anchorage on January 18th for the Alaska Robot Rendezvous State Championship! Our team has worked really hard this year to get to this point. Earning the chance at state championship means costs for air travel for us land-locked Juneauites, as well as hotel accommodations, car rental, and food for the weekend for our team and chaperones.

Let us tell you a little about what we have been doing for our research project and solution. This year the Ice Architects tackled finding a solution to the problem of bird window strikes and what they could do to prevent them and spread awareness of this issue! Bird numbers are on the decline and are important pollinators, more now than ever with the honeybee crisis. The kids created a clear bird strike prevention film with a built in florescent 2"x4" grid to deter birds. It would be minimally visible for humans (won't block your view!) but bright and visible for birds who can see a broader spectrum of light than we can, as well as being easy to clean, install, and maintain. The team also believes the public needs more education on the importance of birds in our ecosystem, cities, and world and on how to prevent them from striking windows. An easy way to remember how far apart any prevention solution on a window should be is our slogan, "2 x 4, Strike No More!". Anything farther apart, such as what is common with the frequently used window stickers, does not keep birds from trying to fly between them and into the reflection on the glass.

The Ice Architects will send you a "2 x 4, Strike No More!" reminder bracelet for every $5 you donate, or a bracelet key chain for every $8 but ANY amount you are able to donate towards our team's success is very appreciated. We couldn't have such amazing educational experiences without the encouragement and support of our friends, family, IDEA staff, and community so for that we say a BIG "Thank You!"!

We are the Ice Architects and thank you for listening!
