Hi everyone,
My name is Mirit and I am fundraising to help my dear friend Chana.
Chana is a very special person who came into my life this year. It seems that the lord sent her to me because we bonded in an immense way.
Chana is 35 years old, single, and has no kids. Her only biological living family member is her aging mother in Israel.
A few years ago, Chana lost her father, and best friend, who died way before his time in a tragic spontaneous moment. Soon after his demise, Chana discovered that she had a rare kidney disease for which she would need a transplant. The condition is called IgA nephropathy and it occurs when IgA protein gets stuck in kidneys causing inflammation. The inflammation causes your kidneys to leak blood and protein (usually immediately) and over the course of time, your kidneys lose function and lead to kidney failure.
A year ago, Chana was hospitalized for the first time due to kidney failure. After hours of testing the results showed that her kidney is 85% deteriorated working with 9% kidney function.
She felt at that moment as if her life was over. Feeling alone, confused, and scared, she kept asking: "Why me?" The thought of having to go through all this alone, especially after just having lost her father broke her.
Living in NY at the time she was diagnosed, Chana moved to South Carolina in order to be placed on a donor's list sooner, as in NY the wait is roughly ten years, and here she has already been placed on the list. I honestly can't imagine moving to a place where I have never been, all by myself, and tackling all of this alone.
Chana's joyful and giving personality is infectious. There is nothing she would not do for others. Being her friend, I feel like I won! The precious time I get to spend with her reminds me of the important things in life. Her strength and perseverance, have inspired me.
Chana is now under the Care of Carolina Medical Transplant Center (Atrium) in Charlotte. She has completed all the needed testing and is now seeking a living kidney donor. This is her only way of getting a second chance in life.
Most of the time, Chana feels sick and is unable to live a normal life and has to work part-time from home. She lives all alone and the medical bills keep piling up. Medical Insurance covers a large portion of the transplant itself, however, the overwhelming amount of immunosuppressant drugs that are required to take after a transplant are not all covered by insurance and are extremely expensive. Without these medications, the kidney will be rejected by my body, and will ultimately fail immediately without these medications.
Unfortunately, Chana does not have any type of savings, or retirement funds set aside to assist with paying for the medications. In addition, she would need to be out of work anywhere between 6-8 weeks without pay, and she i trying not to panic and stay positive, but it is very challenging.
As I sit alone, writing this, I just know that I will be able to help, along with the thought that there are still good people in the world, who would help a fellow human. Thank you, in advance, to all you guardian angels out there!
