Help Oswaldo Chavez Get Out of ICE Detention

Hey y'all, my name is Elizabeth Rugg, and today I am asking for you to please donate to get Oswaldo Chavez (my fiancée) out of ICE detention.

For those of you that don’t know our story, we’ve been dating for two years and have been engaged since February. We’ve been trying to save up to get married, but we’ve had some hurdles along the way.

My love of my life, Waldo, was brought to the USA from Mexico when he was 7 years old on a visa. He had DACA for years, but it expired not long before we first met. Because of this, he has had endless struggles from being an undocumented immigrant. He had difficulty finding jobs, getting healthcare, and doing anything which requires a state-issued photo ID, which is a lot of stuff.

Re-applying for DACA didn’t seem like the right move since it’s expensive, and we decided we would work towards getting married and getting his green card (also very expensive). We were homeless for a couple of weeks, living out of our car and hotel rooms, until a very special family friend helped us out with a place to stay. Waldo finally found a job that he could work at, and he got his first paycheck last week. Things were finally starting to seem possible for us to get married and start a family.

Thursday evening, I took Waldo with me to pick up some medication we needed that my mom picked up for us (in Grand Prairie and we’re in Dublin right now, aka a 2-hour drive). I got pulled over in Glen Rose for a broken license plate light. I’m assuming they read my plates because they went straight over to Waldo asking about his identity. And, he got arrested and detained by ICE.

I am extremely thankful that I know where he is and I can contact him. But this is the absolute worst-case scenario for us. I am terrified that he is going to be mistreated or sent somewhere really bad. But we are being as hopeful as we can. We are praying a lot.

The immigration lawyer we are speaking with wants us to make a down payment of $2500 to get started to help Waldo get out of the detention center and out of harm's way. Whether that is in the US or Mexico, I just want him to be safe with me. I miss him so much, I have been crying every day. Please help us, it would mean the world.

The lifelong trauma of being an undocumented immigrant has been so devastating for Waldo. He’s been living in fear for so long, and his biggest fear is happening. I am so worried about him, and I just want him safe.

Para quienes no conocen nuestra historia, llevamos dos años de novios y estamos comprometidos desde febrero. Hemos estado ahorrando para casarnos, pero hemos encontrado algunos obstáculos en el camino.

El amor de mi vida, Waldo, llegó a Estados Unidos desde México cuando tenía 7 años con una visa. Tuvo DACA durante años, pero expiró poco antes de que nos conociéramos. Por eso, ha tenido que luchar sin parar por ser un inmigrante indocumentado. Le ha costado encontrar trabajo, acceder a atención médica y hacer cualquier trámite que requiera una identificación con foto emitida por el estado, que es bastante.

Volver a solicitar DACA no nos pareció la mejor decisión, ya que es caro, y decidimos trabajar para casarnos y obtener su tarjeta de residencia (también muy cara). Estuvimos sin hogar un par de semanas, viviendo en nuestro coche y en habitaciones de hotel, hasta que un amigo muy especial de la familia nos ayudó a encontrar un lugar donde quedarnos. Waldo por fin encontró un trabajo y recibió su primer sueldo la semana pasada. Por fin empezaba a parecer posible casarnos y formar una familia.

El jueves por la noche, llevé a Waldo conmigo a recoger unos medicamentos que necesitábamos, que mi madre nos recogió (en Grand Prairie y ahora estamos en Dublin, a dos horas en coche). Me detuvieron en Glen Rose por una luz de matrícula rota. Supongo que leyeron mis matrículas porque fueron directamente a ver a Waldo y le preguntaron por su identidad. Y fue arrestado y detenido por ICE.

Estoy sumamente agradecida de saber dónde está y poder contactarlo. Pero este es el peor escenario posible para nosotros. Me aterra que lo maltraten o lo envíen a un lugar muy peligroso. Pero mantenemos la mayor esperanza posible. Estamos rezando mucho.

El abogado de inmigración con el que estamos hablando quiere que hagamos un pago inicial de $2500 para empezar a ayudar a Waldo a salir del centro de detención y a estar fuera de peligro. Ya sea en Estados Unidos o en México, solo quiero que esté a salvo conmigo. Lo extraño tanto que he estado llorando todos los días. Por favor, ayúdennos, significaría muchísimo.

El trauma de toda la vida de ser un inmigrante indocumentado ha sido devastador para Waldo. Ha vivido con miedo durante tanto tiempo, y su mayor temor es hacerse realidad. Estoy muy preocupada por él y solo quiero que esté a salvo.
