Ore mi (Yoruba for “My friend”) is a brand spearheaded by textile artist, researcher and community builder Ayobami Adeyemo. The company specializes in machine embroidery and hand dyeing clothing as a means of connecting people to place, and cultural history to cloth.
Inspired by the legacy of clothing left to him by his mother, and her use of the Aso Ebi custom during a celebration to identify members of her family to celebrants, Ayobami eventually did more research later in life to learn about the meanings behind the Aso Ebi (“Family cloth”) custom and other textiles practices such as Adire. The clothing left to him by his mother inspired a passion to learn more about textile production because of her own endeavors into fashion.
Ore mi will provide a lifeline to Ayobami who, after numerous hardships from sickle cell anemia and personal loss, is eager to build a business that he can grow and manage on his own time. The purchase of an embroidery machine will enable Ayobami to take on the numerous jobs he currently cannot fulfill without it.
It will also offer him the opportunity to collaborate with his local Baltimore community and beyond to push the idea of storytelling and embroidery, and provide others the chance to learn how to operate an embroidery machine.
Helping him reach this goal will help with the purchase of a Bernina E16 Plus embroidery machine, supplies such as threads, stabilizers, machine oil and any additional maintenance costs that come with set up.
