<div>Het gebouw is een van de meest indrukwekkende en oudste houten herenhuizen in het historische centrum van Paramaribo en zal een museum worden ter ere van de Surinaamse historische figuur <strong>Elisabeth Samson (1715-1771)</strong>. Elisabeth Samson was een vrijgeboren zwarte vrouw (uitzonderlijk in haar tijd), die de eerste vrouwelijke miljonair in heel Amerika werd.

<div>De <strong>“Aankoop, restauratie, inrichting en exploitatie als Elisabeth Samsonhuis van het gebouw aan Wagenwegstraat 22 in Paramaribo” </strong>is een <strong>project van USD 2,1 miljoen</strong>, waarvan ongeveer <strong>USD 1,6 miljoen al is gefinancierd (78%</strong>) en <strong>USD 1.5 miljoen is besteed (71%)</strong> per 11 november 2025. Het huidige <strong>financieringstekort </strong>van het project is<strong> USD 465.000.</strong>

<div>Het doel van het project is: de aankoop en restauratie van het historische gebouw aan de <strong>Wagenwegstraat 22 in Paramaribo</strong> in Suriname als het <strong>Elisabeth Samsonhuis.</strong> Wij willen dat dit monumentale gebouw bewaard blijft voor toekomstige generaties en het verhaal van Elisabeth Samson kan worden verteld. Het project heeft daarom culturele, historische en educatieve effecten.

<div>Het gebouw werd op 19 januari 2021 van de overheid <strong>gekocht</strong> door de Stichting Elisabeth Samsonhuis.
</div>

<div>De eerste fase van de restauratie, de <strong>casco-fase,</strong> die betrekking had op de interne structuur van het gebouw, het dak, de gevels en de vloeren, begon op 14 november 2022 en werd afgerond op 11 juni 2024.

<div>De tweede fase van de restauratie, de <strong>afbouw</strong>, die momenteel in uitvoering is, begon op 30 september 2024 en richt zich op de binnenzijde van het gebouw: de interne onderverdelingen, technische voorzieningen zoals elektriciteit, water, sanitaire voorzieningen, koeling, isolatie en lift. Dit werk staat gepland om begin 2026 te worden afgerond. Daarna moeten de terreinwerken worden voltooid, en het gebouw worden ingericht, met name het Elisabeth Samsonmuseum.

<div>We hopen het gebouw in het tweede kwartaal van 2026 voor het publiek te kunnen openen.

<div>Wanneer de restauratie eenmaal is voltooid en het museum geopend, zal de stad Paramaribo een belangrijke toeristische attractie erbij hebben gekregen. Elisabeth Samson zelf dient als rolmodel en inspirerend voorbeeld van vastberadenheid en doorzettingsvermogen. Dit kan een bijdrage leveren aan enig herstel van de gevolgen van slavernij in het verleden.

<div><strong>Het gerestaureerde gebouw is een schenking aan de Surinaamse samenleving als geheel.</strong>
