Hi All! Oliver was diagnosed with FIP (Feline infectious peritonitis) at the beginning of January after a month of vet visits, ophthalmology appointments and a visit to the neurologist. FIP is hard to diagnose and is really just testing for everything else and weeding them out. Oliver has the Dry Ocular/Neuro version of FIP. Some of his symptoms were/are blindness in one eye, week/wobbly back legs, incontinence and stunted growth. Since he has the dry version, it was a little harder to diagnose.
As some of you may know, FIP is almost 100% fatal in cats. So this diagnosis was completely devastating.
Oliver’s neurologist suggested a link to a study on a drug that was tested on cats with FIP with great success! Because the drug is not FDA approved yet (and will likely not be anytime soon) and Dr. Pedersen’s study was over, I thought there was no way we could get hold of the medicine that was only being sold on the Chinese black market at very high prices! Luckily I found a few people online who went through the treatment with success and that fueled me to keep digging. I finally found an online support group and decided that we would try the treatment as far as we could to try and cure Oliver. The neuro is the hardest to cure but can happen. We started the treatment which lasts 84 days minimum and instantly started seeing improvements in his eye, his appetite and his energy. While the injections are brutal and stressful for both Oliver and I, the improvement makes it worth it!
While I’ve been able to keep up so far with the cost of all of the vets, specialists, bloodworkand medicine, we are only two weeks into treatment out of 12! With limited supply due to demand and Chinese holidays/shipping issues, we have been purchasing more expensive brands of the drug. Oliver has a high dosage due to his ocular/neuro symptoms so he is starting to fly though meds! I will continue to put every extra dollar, bonus and tax towards his treatment but if anyone can spare any amountat all, I would be soooo grateful!
We are so grateful our neurologist gave us this link because we would have never known the possibility of this drug. I can honestly say I don’t think Oliver would be here now if it weren’t for this medicine. He was quickly starting to decline. We share our story so others will be informed but we hope no one has to go through this with their beloved pet!
Go Team Oliver!!
