UPDATE (09/05/17):
I took Odie to NCSU this morning for his consult with Dr. Sims and Heather (the prosthetist). Really liked both of them! They both were so very wonderful with him.
Dr. Sims did an initial exam and took measurements before Heather arrived. When Heather arrived, she also examined Odie and we all sat and chatted about the options.
We decided to do a CT scan of his legs that would provide 3-D imaging (and would provide additional insight to his condition) instead of Xrays with casting. If Odie were a bigger dog, casting could have sufficed. But the smaller the dog's leg is, the more important it is to have exact details/measurements...details that the CT Scan provides.
The CT scan showed that Odie is missing a few bones in his lower legs - and that leads them believe that his deformity is congenital (yaaaaaaayyy!!!). He is already showing developmental issues with not using the shorter rear leg, so it's really great that we are able to correct that (with the prosthesis) early in his life.
The CT Scan also showed that his growth plates aren't fully formed, so he is probably close to 7 months of age. Heather will take this into consideration when making his prosthesis so if he takes an unexpected growth spurt, the prosthesis can be added to (although everyone involved thinks he is past the "growth spurt" stage).
Heather stated that the prosthesis would cost between $800 - $1000. That was WONDERFUL news to hear!
Thanks to the fundraising, we were comfortable enough to tell them to go forward with the scans/measurements/etc. It should take 4-5 weeks to get the prosthesis made....then we'll head back to NCSU for the first fitting!
I have since adjusted the GoFundMe to reflect the new cost estimate, which is lower than expected.
As always, we are so very very grateful for the support and well wishes. Who knew just a couple months ago, little Odie's life would change so much?

Odie has an appointment with NCSU and the prosthetics people this Tuesday (September 5)! Fingers crossed that we will have enough funding to order his new paw!!
A Little Background
Six-month old Odie just arrived in America a few weeks ago. A wonderful Armenia rescue named "Pawsitive Rescue Armenia" found Odie struggling to live on the streets. Odie lost his 2 rear paws to either a birth deformity or an act of cruelty, but is still one of the sweetest pups I have ever met. One rear leg is shorter than the other and not having 2 rear paws is causing Odie some difficulty with walking.
Medical Treatment
Odie is heading to North Carolina State Veterinary Hospital in Raleigh, NC and has the amazing opportunity to have a prosthesis made to "even out" his rear legs so he can walk (and run after his new brothers and sisters!) more normally. As you know, when the body doesn't line up correctly, it takes a toll on the whole body.
The breakdown of cost is:
Medical scans of his nub and casting - $300;
Actual prosthesis - approx. $2,500.
We will be selling personal items locally to help raise funds to offset these costs, but we sure could use some additional help. We adopt special needs dogs because they are hard to place....and currently have 7 of these wonderful babies (including Odie). Normally we can provide whatever they need – wheelchairs, physical therapy, protective gear, etc., -- this time though it’s a big chunk of money. The sooner we can raise the money, the sooner Odie will be able to run and play like a normal pup.
All receipts will be posted and available...and if anything is left over, we will donate it back to the wonderful rescue who saved our new boy (Pawsitive Rescue Armenia).
Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!
