HELP OAXACA 2022 AGATHA SURVIVORS FUND

Donation protected
My name is Brent May. I am the owner of Bayside Real Estate and President of AMPI Costa-Istmo, Oaxaca.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all that were devastated from Hurricane Agatha.

Last Monday, expected as a tropical storm turned into a CAT 2 Hurricane “Agatha” hit land via Puerto Escondido, Puerto Angel, and Huatulco. Agatha hit land roughly at 1 PM Monday as a CAT 2 but lost strength within hours, reducing back to a tropical storm.

Puerto Escondido was missed for the most part. Huatulco did receive heavy rains and wind but with its high-quality infrastructure (the drainage ditches) it is dealing with only minor damage. The central coast and beach communities around Puerto Angel were hit the hardest. As well communities outside of Huatulco and along the Copalita River, Santa María Huatulco and in the mountains are also areas of concern because of rain, flood and landslides.

It is a disaster in the smaller communities.

Trees, windows, palapas, tin roofs, entire homes, mass flooding are some of the damages reported thus far as well as loss of life.

Emergency relief is being set in place by the government and local communities. Now, donations for food, clothing, tools, medication and shelter are being set up and needed badly.

We continue to assess who needs the most help and the best way we can help. We have contacts in Copalita, Coyula, Santa María Huatulco, Puerto Angel, Zipolite, San Agustinillo and Mazunte who are helping us understand what is needed in each community.

Huatulco and the Oaxaca Coast have always been considered a low risk hurricane zone. It is one of the reasons many of us decided to move here. We understand that two things help this be true.

1. Hurricanes rotate in a counter clockwise motion so they usually start below us and often head out to sea to the West because we are tucked into the East side of Mexico with a West to East running coastline.

2. The other helper is the Sierra Madre Del Sur mountains. The high mountains help take the strength from the storm. You can see in the image where the storm was a CAT 2 (and forecasted to become a CAT 3) but within hours it changed to a tropical storm. In another locations things would have been much different. Huatulco and Puerto Escondido are fine for the most part and open for tourism.

AMPI Costa-Istmo, Oaxaca (Asociacion Mexicana De Profesionales Inmobiliarios A.M.P.I.) (Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals A.M.P.I.) with the leadership of our Board of Directors is raising funds to buy tools and building materials to rebuild roofs and lost homes.

We need to get people back in their homes.

We are aligning with the local and Federal government to make sure we are complimenting their assistance and helping the most people possible.
