Help NorthFlora Collective Rebuild

Hi everyone!

This week has been one for the birds…

October marks 3 years that our little labor of love has been operating, but instead of celebrating like we had

planned, we now need to save up and try to rebuild. Sometime between 11pm Wednesday 10/11 and 5am Thursday 10/12 a massive oak tree took out our only shade house.

While we are so grateful that no one was injured, we are devastated by the sheer number of plants that were completely shredded by the storm. We had seedlings prepping for next spring, mature specimens ready for the shop, and tons of rare plants that were thriving in the dappled sun under the shade house. Years of literal growth were cut short by the destruction of the structure. Not only were the plants destroyed, most of our heavy-duty greenhouse racks and tables were smashed and broken beyond repair.

As responsible small business owners, we thought we had taken all of the correct precautions and protected our business with the right insurance…. but unfortunately we were wrong. Our insurance lacked the specifics for our off-sight inventory that we had originally thought it had :(

I guess in business you can try to do everything right and still get it wrong.

We wish we could rebuild on our own, but we have quickly realized that funding this project alone may put a detrimental financial hardship on our small business. Running a small business in Tallahassee is hard. We just got through summer, where the weather was sweltering and most of our target audience (college students or those on the FSU/FAMU side of town) had left town. Fall brought excitement for cooler weather and more shoppers, but without a safe structure for the plants to grow under, we wont be able to stock as much as we hoped.
