Who are we?

Bigfoot Hostels Nicaragua is famous for being the first adventure tourism company to send people sledding through ash down the side of an active volcano in 2004. Since then, Bigfoot Volcano Boarding has become a tourism must-do in Central America and was featured as #2 on CNN’s Thrill Seeker’s Bucket List.

Behind the adventure tourism face of the company however, Bigfoot has been investing in our own social responsibility projects in the surrounding community for the last 4 years.

Projects undertaken:

- School repairs at San Francisco school in Los Leches Cuagos, Leon (~100 children aged 3-13 years).

- School repairs at Los Cabitos Kindergarten in Punta Caliente, Lechecuagos (~40 children aged 3-5 years).

- Funding swimming classes for 40 children aged 6-13 years at Clube Metropolitano, Leon.

- Provision of English teachers to San Francisco school for English lessons twice per week. Lessons are open to kids not enrolled at the school as well, and over 600 children attend weekly.

- Provision of school supplies at San Francisco school providing each student and classroom with uniforms, books, stationary and toys for those younger kids.

- University scholarships for 7x students to cover indirect expenses including accomodation, food, transportation from across the country, books, stationary and professional guidance.

What is the situation now?

The current political turmoil in Nicaragua has so far left over 300 people dead, as many as 250,000 unemployed, closed hotels, hostels, restaurants, tour operators and many, many other businesses, stopped emergency services operating, and completely decimated the precious tourism industry in the country.

Like almost all tourism operators in Nicaragua, for the safety of our travelling guests, staff, family and friends, Bigfoot Hostels has been forced to close it’s doors until the political situation stabilizes. With our doors closing we no longer have the revenue required to keep these community projects alive, and have had to send 28 staff home with no income prospects for the foreseeable future.

The children of this beautiful country should be protected as much as possible from the tragic situation we are facing. So while we have pulled our plans for further school repairs and swimming lessons for now, we refuse to give up on our English classes, provision of school supplies, and University scholarships. At present we have needed to stop our English classes due to a lack of revenue to pay the teachers, but we drastically want to open them again as soon as we can!

We also refuse to give up on our incredible staff and their families who have been at the heart and soul of our business for the last 14 years. Being forced to go home without earning the money they need to feed their loved ones in this difficult time is painful on so many levels.

Where is your money going?

As we don’t know when the situation will improve in our country, we are raising $10,000 for 3-month periods at a time. The first 3 month period covers August until the end of October. Below is a breakdown of where the donation money is going every 3 months:

- English Classes: $1,800 cost for two teachers, twice weekly lessons.

- School Supplies: $2,000 (uniforms, books, stationary for ~100 children at San Francisco school).

- University Scholarships: $960 (4x scholarships to be offered, $80 per month, per student).

- Bigfoot Staff Living Allowance: $5,250 (7x staff, $250 per staff member, per month to provide income for them and their families).

In return:

While we can’t send anything of physical value, the owners of Bigfoot Hostels will send you a personal and hand-written thank you card as a show of appreciation for your donation. Just send your contact details to us after donating and we'll send your card straight out!

We appreciate each and every dollar you are able to help us with.

Thank you in advance!
