Help Nic Buy a Wheelchair Van

Donation protected
Hi Friends,

On July 4, after diving off a local pier near my home, I sustained a spinal cord injury at the C5 level, leaving me paralyzed from the chest down. As you read my story, I hope you will consider supporting me as I recover from this accident.

Thanks to the fast-acting emergency responders, I received immediate medical attention. I was rushed to the hospital, where I received two successful surgeries to stabilize my spine, but the damage had been done. I lost all feeling below my armpits and a majority of my hand mobility. After a month-long stay in the ICU to build my lung strength and two months at an inpatient rehabilitation center, I am finally home. I am now here asking for your support as I continue to recover from this incident.

During my stay at the hospital, I received excellent care from some of the Pacific Northwest's best doctors and therapists at Harborview Medical Center and Multicare Good Samaritan. My friends and family surrounded me during the hardest time of my life and are continuing to help today. It's because of the care and love I received that I pulled through.

Due to insurance reasons, I must travel twice weekly to appointments in a different part of Washington. As I adjust to my new life, I've come to realize the world doesn't always keep disabled people top of mind. I’ve encountered bus stops that don’t offer proper curbs accessible to wheelchairs, inconsistent train schedules, and an end to my relationship with rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft.

I am asking for your support in purchasing a wheelchair accessible van to get to and from these appointments. On top of using the van to get to my physical therapy appointments, the van will help me return to some sense of normalcy in being able to get around town, no longer depending on public transit.

I am also left with a number of items that insurance does not cover, including a manual wheelchair and renovations to my house to make it more accessible.

Asking for anything in life is hard. And since my accident, I have found I need to ask for help in nearly every aspect of my life. Now I'm asking you for a huge favor. Please consider donating to help my cause. It’s because of people like you that I am here today.

With gratitude,
Nic
