Help Negiste Study Masters at Sandberg Instituut

I have been successfully accepted as 1 of 12 students to the Sandberg Instituut  MFA programme, Dirty Art Department. As the postgraduate programme of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, the Sandberg Instituut offers Master Programmes in Fine Arts, Interior Architecture and Design. The five Main Departments aim to deepen the practices of artists, designers and critics.

The Dirty Art Department presents itself as an open space for all thought, creation and action. It sees itself as a dynamic paradox, flowing between Cecilia Vallejos' notions of 'the pure and the applied', 'the existential and the deterministic,' 'the holy and the profane.' It is concerned with individuality, collectivity and our navigation of the complex relationship between the built world and the natural world, and between other people and ourselves. Although the Dirty Art Department comes from a shared background of design and applied art, it seeks to reject the division between the pure and the applied. Since ‘God is dead’ and ‘the spectacle’ are omnipresent, it sees the creation of alternative and new realities as the way to reconsider our existential situation on this planet.

The aim of the Dirty Art Department is to develop singular individual and collective practices, distinct from medium or subject, and to give an insight into how to place these practices into the existing contexts of art, design, performance, writing. The final challenge is to create new context; that is, the transformation of reality.

The Dirty Art Department promotes a strong theoretical and philosophical agenda and is open, in practice, to dangerous attempts and spectacular failures. The department was nominated for the inaugural Milan Design Prize in 2016 with the project the Wandering School, a collective living and social sculpture.

I have really struggled to find financial assistance in the U.K as student loans are only granted if studying in the U.K and due to not having lived here for the past 3 years I am not eligible for a personal loan or financial assistance. And thus struggling to make funding my masters a reality.

Before I begin at the institution I am required to pay my tuition in full by the 1st of September 2019.

Tuition fees cost : €2.580,00

Since working over the past two months in the UK I have managed to  save up some of the financial costs for the programme  but still require an amount of €5.000 euros to help with tuition costs, overhead course costs and setting myself up upon arrival.

Attending this programme is something I feel I need to do in order to better articulate my work. After having worked in the industry in many spheres and as a practitioner I understand the importance in having the marketability as an artist which can be gained through academic research as well as mentorship and skills learned in an environment such as the Sandberg Instituut.

The time granted to focus on improving my practice and technique, expanding my international network and conducting the research required to develop my narrative is something  which will allow for my career to have strong foundations, credibility and be financially lucrative.

The Sandberg Instituut playing a role in my artistic career evolution will not only be beneficial for myself but will also prove to have a positive impact on those I come into contact with through my work in its non-disciplinary nondescript mode. The narrative I explore holds conversation in a multitude of spaces and through my works investigation, the methods learned at the institution will allow for an avenue to permeate into these spaces and assist in creating resolution for a more effective society through migration politics,  unpacking identity politics, forced or voluntary displacement conditions.  Plucking  influence into my theory of practice through the current state of migration, within a global perspective, and tightening the gaze on intracontinental migration specifically South Africa, Nigeria and Europe from the background of immigration and its implied terms of emotional and financial well being and my sense of place within the broader South African community and now (European community too) of which I am a part of.

I view this as a final opportunity to finally let go of all that I have experienced & isolated due to fear and doubt and freely explore and execute phenomenal moments that will sculpt and impact on the life of many transnational person in society greatly. ”A fantastic and terrifying liberation”-James baldwin
