Help My Mom Heal

The Short Story

I'm raising money because my mom has suddenly become very sick, yet does not have insurance and currently lives in a state where she cannot qualify for Medicaid without dependent children. $5000 is the amount she needs to move to Colorado, where I will be able to support her in getting well, and where she will be able to access healthcare.

The Long Story

My mom is strong. Yet, at 50, she has had to spend more than her fair share of time in hospitals. She has faced and conquered breast cancer, diverticulitis, and a host of other maladies. The difficulty of her story is heightened by the fact that, due to North Carolina's archaic approach to Medicaid, which only provides coverage to children and adults with dependents, and America's approach to market-rate health insurance plans, she is unable to afford health insurance. That means she has encountered impossibly enormous medical bills on multiple occasions. Nevertheless, thus far, she has found a way to access the medical attention she needs, often settling for the bare minimum of care, and has managed to will herself back to health.

However, what she faces now is something that she won't be able to address without health insurance and the support of her family and friends.

Just a couple of months ago, someone close to her was hospitalized and diagnosed with a terminal illness. In the midst of the stress of the diagnosis, my mom's blood pressure spiked, and she, too, ended up in the hospital. Shortly after her admission, several things she did not know before became clear: 1) her blood pressure has risen to extremely dangerous levels and cannot currently be controlled with medication; 2) she has potentially cancerous thyroid nodules; and 3) she has emphysema.

Normally tough as nails and stubborn as a mule, my mom never  takes a day off work. Never. Not even when she is three days into the flu, on no sleep, after having taken care of three children all day. But this particular combination of illnesses has stopped her in her tracks; her blood pressure and emphysema render it not only painful, but extremely dangerous to work.

Yet, life goes on, and stress mounts. Each day that she is unable to work brings hundreds of dollars of unpaid bills; each week that she is unable to access health care brings the uncontrolled worsening of her emphysema, heightened risk of a heart attack or stroke, and missed opportunities to test and treat the nodules on her thyroid.

Therefore, I am moving her to Colorado at the end of this month. As a law student, I am flat broke and can't afford flights, moving expenses, or to foot utility bills and car payments as I would like to, but this is a situation where there is no other option. She needs to be here to access health care. She needs someone to help her get back on her feet. She needs to live in a place where she has the freedom to try and heal.

That's why I am creating this fundraiser (despite her incessant protesting). I'm out of options, and I'm hoping you can help.

Love,
Moriah
