Every day, he watched his stepfather beat and humiliate his mother—screaming at her, spitting on her, throwing food she cooked onto the floor. Her beatings were blamed on my friend for things he did or didn't do good enough. Nothing was ever good enough. Silence was never safe. Violence could come at any moment. His stepfather repeatedly threatened his mother, telling her, “I’m going to kill your son—and your father.” Those words weren’t empty. They were meant to terrify.

<div> As a child, my friend went to sleep every night listening for footsteps, heart racing, wondering if this would be the night someone he loved wouldn’t survive. He learned to stay invisible, quiet, and constantly alert—because fear ruled his home. That kind of trauma doesn’t disappear. It lives in the body. As an adult, overwhelmed by fear, guilt, and shame, he turned to pain pills to cope. When he tried to get help, he was prescribed Suboxone—but it became another trap. Suboxone itself is highly addictive, and now he’s desperate to break free.
