My mother tries to appear strong for us, but I can see the tears hiding behind her smile, and I feel her pain as she watches us go to sleep hungry.Iman has become silent, no longer laughing as she used to, and little Noor knows nothing of childhood except crying and fear.Sometimes, I place my hand on my empty stomach and tell myself, “Be strong, Fatima, so you don’t add to your mother’s worries,” but my heart breaks when I see my sisters suffering.I dream of returning to our home, of finding enough food to end our hunger, of living even one day without fear. I write these words to cry out with the voice of a wounded childhood… hoping a compassionate heart will hear me and reach out before the war steals what’s left of our dreams.
