<div>My sweet 5-month-old kitten, Astrid, has always been a bundle of love and mischief. I took her in to be spayed, expecting a routine surgery and a quick recovery. But during the procedure, my veterinarian discovered something I never imagined: <strong>signs of wet FIP (feline infectious peritonitis)</strong>, a rare and life-threatening disease.

<div><strong>What Is Wet FIP?</strong>

<div>FIP is caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus. While most cats who carry the virus never get sick, in some kittens the virus mutates and triggers an aggressive immune response.
</div>
<div>•	<strong>Wet (effusive) FIP is the most rapid and dangerous form.</strong>
</div>
<div>•	It causes fluid to build up in the abdomen or chest, leading to swelling, breathing problems, and discomfort.
</div>
<div>•	Without treatment, wet FIP is almost always fatal.

<div><strong>Astrid's Journey So Far</strong>

<div>During her spay surgery, the vet found fluid in her abdomen and sent samples for testing. The results confirmed my worst fear: wet FIP. I was heartbroken and terrified but determined not to give up.
</div>

</div>
<div>There is hope. Thanks to new antiviral treatments, many cats who receive timely therapy are going into remission and living happy, healthy lives. But the medication alone is costly—often <strong>$3,000–$6,000</strong> for an 84-day course—plus regular vet visits, bloodwork, and supportive care.

<div>Once she gets through her 84 days of medication, she will then go into an observation period of 84 days which will require additional vet visits, bloodwork, ultrasounds and supportive care.
</div>
