Help move and establish the In Deep Music Archive

The In Deep Music Archive has been a labour of love for me for decades and now the landlord of the premises in Penzance has become too sick to continue with managing his properties and he has bequeathed the building to someone else who on examination of the premises concluded not that it was an amazing collection but branded it a fire hazard. It’s the end of an era and if I don’t move the archive before the end of the year he will be giving us notice to leave as he has plans for the building. At this point in the wake of the pandemic, I have the time to get this giant task together with no looming touring this year. But the job of moving it to Portugal where I now live will be a massive undertaking. Still, if I can raise the money to do it from future touring, royalties I may earn (not from Spotify), from donations, from sponsorships, philanthropists and windfalls, I may actually at some point next year be able to realise my dream of having premises which the public can enjoy with all the LPs, all the singles, all the CDs, all the cassettes, all the 8-tracks, all the 78s, all the books, all the guitars and the amps, the artefacts, the lava lamps, those crazy Russian projectors I was given and the vision of making a unique centre of musical culture for the world to enjoy.

Here in Porto, there are so many available buildings that need renovating that would be perfect but perhaps there is already a property that is sufficient in size where we could place the collection. In my dreams I see a studio upstairs, a small stage in the corner and various freshly squeezed juices with real and decaf coffee, teas and drinks for everyone, all those Portuguese cakes that I am trying to avoid and in a town as popular as this with tourists, the opportunity for people from all over the world to visit and experience such a lifelong and magnificent collection. Long after I am gone I wish it to still be here and as my Aunty Gwen died today on the eve of my birthday I feel like she would be proud to see this come to something as she herself was a huge music lover and she has left me her treasured stereogram that she owned for 60 years.

I intend to keep this GoFundMe campaign open till the end of the year and then see where we are when the bills come in. We have to move everything from Penzance to our storage house near Bristol, where my flight cases are and another 100 boxes of records, guitar trunks and a collection of headless dummies. The amount we are trying to raise may seem high, but it’s not going to be cheap and the idea of having the archive, like a museum of history and of the contemporary is to have it continually stocked with old and new artefacts. With a project of this size, every little bit helps and the initial costs are going to be the actual transportation from England to Portugal where I am now officially a resident. There might have been a chance for the collection to stay in England but Brexit has made that impossible. That may be a blessing in disguise because to take something like this and find premises in a British city simply wouldn’t be cost-effective and as I’ve discovered Penzance was always too far away for many people to come and visit. Porto on the other hand is easy to get to and with 300 days a year of sunshine, it’s not difficult to attract a large number of people to this beautiful city by the Douro river and the Atlantic Ocean. Also remember that this is where the Lello bookshop, one of the inspirations for JK Rowling’s Harry Potter world, is located (she used to live here and you can see evidence of her inspiration). But whether this idea for In Deep is a fantasy or not, you have to attempt to make your dreams come true and I’m sure such a project would inspire many people as one of the world’s great music collections is preserved for posterity.

Thank you in advance for any help, you can always contact us in regards to our plans and your ideas, how we are going to physically make it happen and any thoughts on how to make it all run smoother will be very much appreciated. Financial contributions or any other means of making this happen will always be seriously considered, we need a couple of big trucks and when we arrive in Portugal a place to unload them into.
