On Friday night, his mother Jenn Sawicki received the dreadful call saying that she should come to the hospital in England. We were able to get a flight out that night for Jenn and her husband Chris and they arrived at the hospital on Saturday around 5pm.
Matthew has been sedated and on a ventilator since Friday night as he was having trouble breathing. He is in critical condition but has been stable since arriving at the ICU and being ventilated. On Saturday, it was confirmed that he has bacterial meningitis, a very serious condition that involves swelling of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Since Saturday, his anitbiotics have been adjusted to target the specific strain identified in the testing.
While Matthew has insurance to cover his medical costs, the costs for Jenn and Chris to fly to the UK and the cost for accomodations and other incidentals while Matthew recovers are not covered, nor is time off work. We are also unsure how long they will need to stay.
The purpose of this gofundme campaign is to try and offset those costs. Every little bit helps and, more importantly, Jenn and Chris are so appreciative of the kind thoughts and prayers that they have been receiving since this ordeal first began.
*** Jenn and Chris have asked me to let everyone know that any funds raised over and above their costs will be donated to the ICU Unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. They are so grateful for the care that Matthew has been receiving.
