Because of all generous donations and support, we have been able to reach our goal! Mohammed sends his message of gratitude as well this morning, "Extend my sincere thanks to all the donors. God bless you."
Last night we also received word from Mohammed's attorney that his court case has been adjourned for a latter date (TBD) due to an attorney scheduling conflict. We will let you know as soon as we find out the revised court date. We will leave donations open, as anything donated above the original goal will go towards the purchasing of the hardware store and relieve some of the cost from Mohammed's investors.
Thank you to all of the media outlets who shared this story and to Equality for Flatbush who helped the campaign in its final hours immensely. Our hearts are warmed and we have restored faith that we can fight gentrification and rise above this together!

This fund has been made to help our neighbor Mr. Mohammed Kamara keep his business in our community. Mr. Kamara owns and operates “American Star Hardware Store” on St Johns pl and has served the neighborhood with care and dedication for more than 20 years. Recently the executor of the building has put the the property up for sale and Mohammed is in risk of being permanently evicted.
After a year of lenghty legal disputes to try to keep his place of business, Mr. Kamara was offered the rights to the selling contract if he manages to pay all taxation fines first.
If we gather $23,400 by the next court day on February 13th 2018, Mr. Kamara could have first access to the selling contract and avoid eviction. The goal amount listed here covers the GoFundMe processing fees.
Mohammed Kamara is a cherished member of this local community and he is the father of six children. Even if you do not know him directly, his plight is that of every small business owner being displaced in a rapidly gentrified city. If we stand in solidarity in cases like this we can help decide the future of our neighborhoods and keep our communities together. When unjust displacement happens it affects the security of the whole neighborhood and breaks up longstanding relationships in a community that go beyond quick profit.
