<div>Hello, we are Sara and Matilda and we are organizing this funding to support our friend Miriam, who was a domestic worker in Los Angeles. We’ve known her and her family for 3 years, and they have reached out looking for any help to get them through this very difficult time. With this funding we hope to be able to support them as they recover and move forward after their sudden and inhumane experience recently being detained by ICE, denied due process, and then deported back to a country they fled from 13 years ago. This is her story.

<div>We are a family of 4 (my husband, 13 year old daughter, 5 year old daughter and myself) originally from Peru. We left Peru in dire need of work and for our own safety, first to Chile where we lived in Santiago for 10 years. Due to inflation and lack of jobs there during the pandemic, we made the difficult decision to move our family again, this time to the United States in 2022, to request asylum. I was following the strict legal process to become a legal resident, which entailed immigration appointments every 3 months, an ankle bracelet, and constant check-ins via video and phone call with an immigration officer.

<div>For my last appointment, I paid $800 to the US government to extend our legal stay during our appeal process. However when my family and I arrived to the next appointment, we were all taken by ICE officers without warning, and denied phone calls to loved ones or lawyers. We were taken directly to the airport with whatever belongings we had with us. Over three days, we were moved around on airplanes and vans, often in the middle of the night, between LA, Louisiana and Dallas, where they separated us from our two daughters for 3 days in an ICE detention encampment. This was so hard for me, and my daughters who cried the entire 3 days, and they still ask me everyday why that happened. I pray that they can forget this whole experience one day.

<div>After days of detainment, only then were we allowed our first phone call, during which we were able to find a lawyer who promised to meet us at the facility the following day. But, ICE then moved us that night at 4am to another facility, before the lawyer could get to us. We were told we were never allowed to contact the lawyer again.
</div>
<div>After being transferred a second time back from Texas to Louisiana, we were then ultimately flown to Peru. This is when I felt the deep sadness of leaving Los Angeles, after being here for 3 years and raising my family.
</div>
<div>We spent 8 days in detention, being transferred between cities at all hours of the day and night, deprived of sleep and peace, always under constant surveillance by 4 ICE agents, and staying in places which resemble prisons.
</div>
<div>We landed in Peru, after 13 years of not living there, all of our belongings left in Los Angeles, and without Peruvian documentation, which is very necessary to find a job or an apartment. The US failed to return many documents necessary for our relocation and reintegration into another country. Per the laws in Peru, we are unable currently to enroll our children in school, as they do not honor the credits for the schooling my girls have already received in the US.

<div>On top of all this, our hometown in Peru has become a much more dangerous place, with high levels of crime, murder and extortion.
</div>
<div>However recently, a family friend who was being extorted in our town, found a way out to Madrid, Spain, where he found a new life and schooling for his child. He has been in contact with us and advises us on a possible move to Madrid.

<div>I took this as a sign from God, whom I prayed to for guidance. We have decided again to move our family to try to have a better life free of the threat of violence and fear of extortion.

<div>We are humbly asking on Miriam’s behalf for donations to help cover the cost of 4 airplane tickets, and a studio apartment for 4 months, while they find a job and process their legal documentation thanks to a Spanish - Peruvian agreement, which states they can legally live there for 2 years. <div>Hola, somos Sara y Matilda y estamos recaudando fondos para apoyar a nuestra amiga Miriam, quien fue una empleada doméstica en Los Ángeles. La conocemos a ella y a su familia hace 3 años, y nos contactaron pidiendo ayuda durante este momento muy difícil que están pasando. Con estos fondos, esperamos poder apoyarlos mientras se recuperan y salen adelante luego de una experiencia repentina e inhumana que tuvieron siendo detenidos por ICE, donde fueron negados un procesamiento legal y fueron deportados de vuelta a un país del cual se escaparon hace 13 años. Esta es su historia:

<div>Somos una familia de 4 (mi esposo, hija de 13 años e hija de de 5 años) originalmente de Perú. Nos fuimos de Perú por una necesidad extrema de trabajo y por nuestra seguridad; primero a Chile, donde vivimos en Santiago por 10 años. Debido a la inflación y falta de empleo durante la pandemia, tomamos la difícil decisión de mover a nuestra familia una vez más, esta vez a los Estados Unidos en el 2022, pidiendo asilo. Estaba siguiendo el proceso de inmigración estricto requerido, el cual requería citas cada 3 meses, una tobillera electrónica, y videollamadas constantes con un oficial de immigracion.

<div>En mi última cita, pagué $800 al gobierno Americano para extender nuestro estatus legal durante nuestra apelación. Sin embargo, cuando mi familia y yo nos presentamos a la cita, fuimos capturados por ICE sin advertencia, y nos negaron llamadas telefónicas a gente cercana o abogados. Fuimos llevados directamente al aeropuerto, solo con las pertenencias que teníamos en el momento. Durante 3 días, fuimos trasladados en aviones y camionetas, generalmente en el medio de la noche, entre Los Angeles, Louisiana y Dallas, donde nos separaron de nuestras hijas en un centro de detención de ICE.

<div>Esto fue muy duro para nosotros, y mis hijas que lloraron los tres días, me siguen preguntando por qué pasó esto. Rezo porque puedan olvidar lo que pasó algún día.
</div>
<div>Después de días de detención, nos dejaron hacer nuestra primera llamada a un abogado, quien nos prometió vernos la mañana siguiente. Pero ICE nos trasladó esa misma noche a las 4am a otro edificio, antes de que el abogado pudiera vernos. Nos dijeron que no estábamos autorizados a contratar al abogado nuevamente.

<div>Después de ser trasladados una segunda vez de Dallas a Louisiana, nos pusieron en un avión para ir a Perú. En ese momento sentí la tristeza profunda de dejar Los Ángeles, después de 3 años de criar a mis hijas ahí.
</div>
<div>Pasamos 8 días en detención, siendo transferidos entre ciudades a todas horas del día y la noche, siendo privados de sueño y paz, siempre siendo vigilados por 4 agentes de ICE, y durmiendo en lugares que parecían prisiones.
</div>
<div>Aterrizamos en Perú, después de 13 años de habernos ido, con todas nuestras pertenencias aun en Los Ángeles, y sin documentos Peruanos, los cuales son muy necesarios para encontrar trabajo y estadía. Los Estados Unidos no nos devolvieron los documentos necesarios para la reubicación e integración a otro país. Por las leyes de Perú, no somos capaces de inscribir a nuestras hijas en el colegio, ya que no aceptan los créditos académicos que mis hijas traen de su educación Americana.
</div>
<div>Por encima de todo, nuestro pueblo en Perú se ha convertido en un lugar muy peligroso, con niveles altos de crimen, asesinato y extorsión.
</div>
<div>Recientemente, un amigo quien fue extorsionado en nuestro pueblo, logró establecerse en Madrid, España, donde encontró una nueva vida y escuela para su hijo. Ha estado en contacto con nosotros y nos dio consejo en como hacer la mudanza a Madrid.
</div>
<div>Tomé esto como una señal de Dios, a quien le pedí guía. Así que decidimos mover a nuestra familia una vez más, en busca de una vida mejor, libres de la amenaza de violencia y el miedo a la extorsión.
