<div>In September, my sweet mum, Mimi, suddenly fell seriously ill while visiting me in Canada from Japan. This led to two emergency surgeries, being hospitalised for 15 days, getting COVID during it, and diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. This all happened to her <strong>without</strong> OHIP health insurance as a visitor.

<div>Although she has minimal travel health insurance coverage, the unexpected events of medical emergencies away from home, along with the drop in our family’s income has led us to ask for support from our community and friends.

<div>To support our mum, both Emi and I are currently taking unpaid leaves / cutting down on working hours. I have also delayed starting my university semester to care for Mimi. With both of us unable to work full-time, we are struggling to cover the necessary Canadian medical bills and living costs.

<div>Once Mimi is back home in Japan, her cancer treatment including chemotherapy will take at least a year, and she won’t be able to work during this period.
