Help Milly Walk Again

10/4/2018 update:

We are not seeking any more donations for Milly. Here's why:

GREAT NEWS:
We got a very happy surprise yesterday. Milly will NOT need orthopedic surgery after all.

We dropped Milly off for her surgery yesterday. Our surgeon, Dr. Balfour, then called and said that he has concluded that on balance Milly would be best off left to heal without surgery. Milly has mild lameness in her right hind leg, but she did not appear to feel pain when he palpated her right hip. Under sedation, the xrays showed ongoing healing of the right iliac fracture and that there is  only small displacement of the hip, with good pelvic canal diameter.

Dr. Balfour said he would have strongly recommended surgery if the break was fresh. However, because the fracture has already begun to heal and it appears that Milly will be able to walk well, rebreaking the fracture in order to obtain better alignment of the ends of the fractured bone could do more harm than good. Dr. Balfour was particularly concerned that rebreaking the fracture  could result in injury to the sciatic nerve.

The cost for the exam, xrays, and blood work came to about $550. We anticipate about another $700 of expense for spaying and a dental.

Milly's very generous donors  have already donated more than Milly's vet bills  will cost us. However, it appears that we likely will have to rescue a 10 year old female Schnauzer with a corneal ulcer. We propose to use whatever is left of the funds donated for Milly in order to help with the medical costs of  the 10 year old who, of course, will also need a dental.

Thanks very much to everyone who has donated for Milly.

10/1/2018:
Milly is a very sweet 5 year old Miniature Schnauzer. It is unlikely that Milly has led a great life so far.

Milly was surrendered to the Bonita shelter (southeast of San Diego) on 9/23/2018 with multiple pelvic fractures.

Milly's #$%^^ owner asked the shelter to euthanize Milly. The  folks at the shelter refused because Milly's injuries were treatable; and they called CMSR. They told us that Milly's pelvic fractures seem to be improving with cage rest, and that she also has some dental issues. We asked for a copy of Milly's radiographs and sent them to our surgeon, Dr. Balfour, for review. Dr. Balfour said that most of the fractures would heal on their own but that one needed surgery.
