Help Millennials Help Our Community

Donation protected
Have you heard that millennials are flaky, self-centered, $8-coffee drinkers? At YCore, we know this isn't true (Ok, maybe the coffee snob part). In 2014, a group of Stanford alumni realized the power of millennials. They created a program to inspire young professionals to get involved in the social sector–now, not later. Since then, our community has flourished, driven by passionate young professionals who are dedicated to improving the world around them.

We will be leading five different projects through YCore in support of five different non-profits this winter. In order to continue to be able to make projects like these possible, we want to raise money in support of the organization that is making this all possible: YCore. YCore truly enables young people to create meaningful relationships with organizations that are dedicated to enriching our community. Please see below for information on our five projects, and hopefully you will be inspired to help us reach our goal of $12,000 to keep programs like this alive and well!

826 Valencia:
826 Valencia is an organization that is dedicated to supporting under-resourced students with developing their writing skills. At its core, the organization believes in the power of writing as an indispensable foundation for the workforce, as well as an essential skill that any young person should have in their toolkit. They believe that through demystifying the writing process, and enabling students to be more confident with writing, they'l be able to help solve problems such as closing the achievement gap.
This winter, we are joining forces with 826 in order to drive foot traffic to their Tenderloin store. 826 Valencia has two store-fronts in the city, both of which help support keeping their writing programs free. We will be doing persona research to understand who we can help drive to the Tenderloin location, create content specific to driving more people to this store, and templatizating a marketing plan that can be used not only in publicizing this location, but also locations to come.

Community Music Center:
Community Music Center (CMC) is a nonprofit that for the past 100 years has been working hard to make high quality music accessible to everyone. CMC offers over 30 classes in groups and private lessons as well as summer camps and music therapy to more than 2,000 students that range from young to old at their buildings in the Mission and the Richmond areas of San Francisco. The primary way that CMC ensures accessibility to high quality music is by providing around 60% of their students with tuition assistance. Last year that looked like $2 million to help children, young adults, and senior citizens to learn to play the piano, to sing in a choir, to be healed and helped by the power and beauty of music. More importantly, CMC brings people together and encourages individuals to be their best and do their best.
Over the next few months, we will be working on equipping CMC to increase their revenue from full tuition paying students. It is these students who make CMC’s crucial work of providing tuition assistance sustainable. It also gives room for CMC to grow their offerings and space. This will involve getting to know who are CMC students. We will do market research to understand who are potential students for CMC to engage. We will also provide CMC with an initial package of marketing to test out. Ultimately, our team will provide crucial information about potential students that CMC will be able to target with marketing strategies and tactics for the foreseeable future.

Housing Right Committee of San Francisco:
The mission of Housing Rights Committee (HRC) is two-fold: 1) help tenants understand their rights against their landlords, and if they have any issues, help them bring up issues with landlords and 2) organize community and policymakers to create sustainable housing policies. They've been doing this work since 1979, and have a small staff of 16 split across two offices in the Richmond and Mission to make it all happen!
We will be working with HRC on two things: 1) help them port data on paper about their clients into a database and create dashboards on top to help them quantify the housing crisis to policymakers and 2) ensure that HRC's client intake processes are digitally driven, so that data they have about clients don't end up on paper and end up directly in database. Both projects ensure that HRC is setup for success in using the data to both internally be efficient and influence policymakers to create better housing policies for San Francisco.

Sunnyvale Community Services:
Sunnyvale Community Service’s (SCS) mission is to prevent homelessness and hunger for low-income families and seniors facing temporary crises. SCS assists low-income individuals with financial assistance for rent, security deposits, utility bills, car repairs, and gift cards for critical family needs. In addition to financial aid, SCS distributes over 900 tons of nutritious food and produce year-round, including donations from Second Harvest Food Bank as well as purchased healthy foods including milk and cereal.
During the next few month, we will be working with SCS to evaluate the feasibility of switching their food distribution efforts to a consistent store model where clients can ‘shop’ for (choose) food like they would at a regular grocery shop. We also plan to look into strategies for store operations such as billing, store layout and customer management. We expect a store model to improve the client experience, improve the efficiency and safety of the facility and increase the facility's capacity.

Kitchen Table Advisors:
Kitchen Table Advisors envisions a new generation of thriving small-scale, sustainable farms that produce healthy food and form the foundation of regional food systems. KTA offers their 50+ small Bay Area farms 1:1 business advising assistance, a cohort experience, and networks of support to support their growth. Last year, over 80% of KTA client farms were owned by womxn, immigrants, and/or people of color.
This spring, our YCore team is developing financial projections for KTA to consider selling their farmers’ value-added products (from pasta to fruit leather to salsas) in “pantry boxes” as an earned revenue stream. We are conducting market research to design, price, and assemble these boxes; detailing logistics; and then estimating costs for a variety of scenarios - all so KTA can ultimately decide how to best achieve their mission and vision towards financial security for small, sustainable local farms.
